SECTION I: TEACHING, ASSESSMENT, MENTORING, ADVISING
1. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guide your practice as a teacher, assessor of learners, mentor and/or
advisor.

My philosophy of teaching is to assist students to reach their fullest potential through the
learning process. This is done through a shared partnership between teacher and student
with mutual respect being at the basis. Both parties bring to a classroom a wealth of
experiences through diverse upbringings and life experiences, which can enhance the
learning process. It is the responsibility of the educator to nurture this learning environment
by encouraging open sharing of ideas and knowledge and welcoming each students
participation. Out of this safe environment, students will rise to the level of realistic
expectations set by the educator. Due to the belief that a students level of commitment is
measured by an educators passion, a teachers objectives are as follows: to provide the
necessary resources for learning through current evidenced based practice in all course
content, to foster critical thinking skills, to provide positive reinforcement and constructive
feedback, and to personally demonstrate the highest integrity for students to emulate. The
ultimate outcome and reward for an educator is to help develop a well-rounded student that
transforms into an exceptional nurse that is full of knowledge and compassion.
2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your role as a teacher, assessor, mentor and/or advisor.

Through the last five years of nursing at MD Anderson Cancer Center I have been given
several opportunities to get involved in educating my peers. I have been precepting new
graduate and experienced nurses for the last 4 years of my career at MD Anderson Cancer
Center. I have created and taught several presentations on numerous subjects, such as,
infection control, a new motivated and moving program, chemotherapy protocols, and
managing side effects, on my inpatient lymphoma/multiple myeloma unit to secretaries,
nursing assistants, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, etc.
While working towards obtaining my masters in nursing education at UTMB, I have been
given the opportunity to create several learning modules, exam questions, and
presentations. In this last semester, I have been able to put my education into practice. I
taught skills lab, hospital clinicals, and pharmacology to semester one and two bachelors
students.

outside the past 5 years but that are significant. At the end of each description, tab forward to insert new line.

In 2015, I designed and posted data on a bulletin board for Magnet review which included
presenting this information to the magnet representative who visited my unit. I also
presented with a PowerPoint lecture in front of a board of magnet representatives on a
program initiative that I served as a chair member.

SECTION II: ENDURING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

1. PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS.
Describe the goals or philosophy that guides your development of educational materials.

As a coach to a new graduate nurse, I strive to provide them with confidence and critical
thinking skills in a safe environment. I teach these nurses with educational materials such
as hand-outs, articles, and patient education. I provided the nurse with a binder of these
articles and information to keep with them as a reference and guide for the care they
provide. I encourage them to study at home and then I will be able to help push the
education further by quizzing their knowledge.
2. PREPARATION.
Describe how you have prepared yourself for your role as a developer of educational materials.

The courses at UTMB have dramatically helped prepare me for this role as an educator
who develops educational materials, especially the classes with Dr. Eva Stephens. I also
have a few specific mentors that are currently working as hospital and classroom
educators that have helped guide me as Ive been learning to become an educator and put
together educational materials, for example, hand-outs, PowerPoints, professional papers,
or educational games. I have also attended a course at MD Anderson to help in educating
new hired nurses.
3. EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS.
Duplicate and complete this table for each enduring material related to education you wish to present. List your
materials in reverse chronological order, with the most recent ones at the beginning. In the Appendix, provide
