GENERAL INFO
Local time
Romania is 2 hours ahead of GMT and 1 hour ahead of CET. Daylight saving time runs
from the end of March until the end of September.
Currency
The national currency is leu (RON) and the plural is lei. In most places in Bucharest you
can only pay by cash, but there are many places where you can use checks or credit cards,
especially in malls and restaurants. You can find easily exchange offices, that usually have a sign
where is written”Casă de schimb valutar” or just “Exchange”. You might be asked for your
passport to complete the transaction.
Religion
Most Romanians are Christians, usually Orthodox (87%), Catholics (5%) or Lutherans
(3%). However, other religions are well represented and you can find many other types of houses
of prayer.
Weather
Romania has a temperate continental climate of transition, specific for central Europe,
with four distinct seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. Mean annual temperatures
around 11 ° C in the South, but in northern side of Romania they are around 8 ° C. Average
annual maximum temperature varies between 22 ° C and 24 ° C in summer, and between -3 ° C
and -5 ° C during winter.
Summer is a warm season, which lasts from late May to mid September in the South
Plains and West. In southern Romania there are over 40 "tropical" days (with temperatures above
35 degrees Celsius) and 90 days of summer (with temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius to 30
degrees Celsius).

Winter is a cold season, the cold air masses coming from the East bring temperatures
down to -20 degrees Celsius or below (the record is -38.5 degrees Celsius, the Bod, near Brasov,
registered on 25 January 1942). Snow is not abundant compared with other European countries,
the lack of precipitation. In South and West in particular, snow melts and restore several times
during the winter.
Electricity
The main electricity in Romania is 220 volts and 50 Hz. British and American outlets
differ from the Romanian ones, so you may need to bring a transformer and/or adapter for your
electrical appliances.

TRANSPORTATION
Bucharest has the largest transport network in Romania and among the bigest in Europe.
The network is composed of a subway system, plus three methods of surface transport: trams,
buses and trolleybuses. Although there are many ways to coresspond, subway system and surface
transportation are administered by different organizations (Metrorex and RATB, respectively)
and use separate tickets, making it difficult to transfer between them several times.

Subway system
The subway system is provided by Metrorex and has four lines: M1, M2, M3 and M4. In
total, a length of 63 km and 45 stations, with an average distance of 1.5 kilometers between
stations. It is among the fastest forms of transportation in the city. Below is the subway map:

In Bucharest, there is a well-developed network of transport vans that provide the link
between the city and places around them as an alternative to public transport. In early 2008 there
were 9500 licensed taxi in Bucharest.
RATB system bus is the most extensive of all methods of transport in Bucharest. In fact,
RATB ads say that nobody could be further from the five minutes walking from a bus station.
There are 101 bus lines, most serving destinations in Bucharest. There are, however, some routes
providing links to locations outside Bucharest that are located in the Ilfov County.
You can also travel by taxi and below you have a list of several names of taxi companies,
followed by phone numbers you can call to make an order. We must mention that you must type
the prefix of Bucharest (021) before the phone numbers below.

Road transportation
Bucharest is the most important city road communications in Romania. From Bucharest
leave the following national roads and highways:
• DN7 Bucharest - Titu - Pitesti - Ramnicu Valcea - Sibiu - Deva - Arad - Nadlac and further
to Hungary
These roads and highways are part of European routes E60, E70, E81 and E85.
Other national roads that start in the capital are: DN1A, Bucharest - Ploiesti - Vălenii de Munte

The most important railway station in Bucharest, and also in Romania, is the North Station.
Other stations in Bucharest are: Basarab Station, Rahova Station, Obor Station, Baneasa Station,
Pantelimon South Station, Titan Station. In the past there were several stations in Bucharest.
Air transportation
Otopeni Airport (Henri Coanda) is the main gateway from Bucharest. From here, depart
and arrive daily flights to (or from) Arad, Bacau, Baia Mare, Cluj Napoca, Constanta, Iasi, Satu
Mare, Suceava, Targu Mures, Timisoara and Chisinau, but also to many other airports in Europe,
North America, Asia and Africa. In 2007 there was a volume of passenger traffic of about 5
million.
The Aurel Vlaicu Airport focuses mainly low cost airline with flights both within the
country and also in other European countries.

Arcul de Triumf
The Arc of Triumph is a monument located in the north of Bucharest, district 1, the road junction
with boulevards Constantin Prezan Kiselev, Saeb Salam and Alexandru Constantinescu. The
Arch of Triumph is one of the monuments that commemorate the participation of Romania in the
First World War by the Allies at the end that all Romanian-inhabited territories were found for
the first time brought together in one place. The monument was designed by Petre Antonescu
and built between 1921-1922. Since the execution time of the monument was very short, it was

Parliament Palace is the largest and most imposing building in Romania, and beyond. It came 3
times in the Guinness book of records, being the biggest building for civil, the world's most
expensive building in the world and the heaviest administrative building in the world. It is
located at the intersection of Izvor street, United Nations Avenue, Liberty Avenue and Route
September 13. In 1977, after a devastating earthquake took place in Bucharest, which led to the
collapse of several historic buildings, Nicolae Ceausescu, at that time leader, called for the
"reconstruction" of the city. Surprisingly, the architect appointed to handle the design of the
building was one of only 28 years old, Anca Petrescu.
The Romanian Athenaeum is a concert hall in Bucharest, located on Calea Victoriei, in the
George Enescu Square (north side of Piata Palatului). Here is also situated The George Enescu
Philharmonic. To build this monument Bucharest was initiated enlightening for a memorable
campaign fundraising, named "Give one leu for the Athenaeu(m)". The architect who designed
the building was the gifted French artist Albert Galleron. Building dimensions are impressive, a
concert hall with about 800 seats, being also among the buildings with the best acoustics in
Romania.
The building was erected to mid `50s (1952-1957), chief project engineer was Professor
Emeritus Panaite Maziliu. The purpose of the building was originally to publish state media,
especially the "Scanteia" newspaper, hence the popular name of “The House of Free press”. On
the building was taken into account, for the first time, a calculation of earthquake resistance,
similar to those made in Italy during Mussolini. The inspiration for the building has a Russian
origin, resembling is with the University of Moscow.
CEC Palace is a building in Bucharest, located in Calea Victoriei. After it was renovated several
times and demolished, the present building was built by French architect Paul Gottereau. The
palace, built in eclectic style, ends with a dome of glass and metal. Admission is crowned by a
semicircular pediment, supported by a pair of columns of composite style. The four volumes of
the corner are decorated with flags frontons and are covered by domes in the Renaissance style.
A much larger dome covers the central hall of the building, which has different counters of the
institution.
Victory Palace:

Victoria Palace is a palace in Bucharest, located in Victoria Square and it helds the headquarters
of the Romanian Government. It was built in 1937 by the architect Duiliu Mark, the same who
designed the new facade of the Opera in Timisoara.
The Palace of Justice:

The palace was built in the last decade of the nineteenth century, between 1890 and 1895.
Building designers are renowned architects Albert Ballu and Ion Mincu, which named the
University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest. The palace architecture is a mix of styles,
influences outside the building with municipal and central body of the Renaissance. Charles
Frederick Stork Stork built the statues in front of the palace that symbolize The Law, The Justice,
The building is located behind the National Museum of Art of Romania, the former royal palace.
The hall helds lectures, conferences and concerts and it is a monument representative of
Romania. It was built in two years, between 1959 and 1960. The main hall is impressive and it
can hold up to 4060 spectators.
Church Cretulescu

CreŃulescu Church, also known script Kretzulescu Church, is a place of worship in Bucharest.
The building was built in the early eighteenth century, in order steward Iordache Safta
Cretulescu and his wife, a daughter of Prince Constantin Brancoveanu. The construction plan has
a three-lobe bearing above the nave, a svelte tower and above the narthex, bell tower. Both are
equipped with long narrow windows, and tend stressing verticality of the monument, which is
achieved by plastic decorative facades. They are divided into two registers; the lower is
decorated with rectangular panels and the top with double arches, extended. Entering the church
Located in downtown and an area of about 16 hectares, the garden is the oldest public garden in
Bucharest. It is located at the intersection of Queen Elizabeth bulevard and Schitu Magureanu
boulevard and next to one of the most prestigious high schools in Bucharest, Colegiul National
Gheorghe Lazar. Planning style is similar to English parks, with numerous entries. Among the
monuments in the park, we can see the Mother bust Smara, Gheorghe Panu Fountain and Sissi
Stefanidi.
Herastrau Park:

The park is among the largest in Bucharest, with an area of 1.1 km2, of which 0.7 km2 of the
lake. Initially, the park was a swamp area that was dry between 1930 and 1935, the park being
open in 1936.
