High School Dropouts
High school students in the United States are dropping out of school rapidly. There are
many different reasons why high school students are dropping out. Most of high school students
that drop out of school get into the wrong crowd and or get into trouble. High school dropouts
can be controlled by Welcoming the family, having a bond with the student, and having a good
guidance system for students that need to talk.
When a school student no matter what age comes to a new school district they should be
welcomed in with open arms. Research consistently finds that family involvement has a direct,
positive effect on the childs achievements and is the most accurate predictor of a student's
success in school (Williams). Students should be able to feel safe with going to an administrator
if they are having any problems. A comprehensive violence prevention plan, including conflict
resolution, violence prevention at all grade levels that enhance positive social attitudes and
effective interpersonal skills in all students (Dr. Jay Smink). Teachers who work with youth at
high risk of academic failure need to feel supported and need to have an avenue by which they
continue to develop skills, techniques, and learn about innovative strategies. (Dr.Smink). No
matter what a student should never feel like they are not welcomed or not getting along with
other students.
A high school student should have a good bond with a couple of teachers, no matter what
the student should feel comfortable around any teacher. Mentoring is a one-to-one caring,

supportive relationship between a mentor and a mentee that is based on trust (Dr. Jay Smink).
Some teachers should be willing to be a support system to students. When educators show
students that there are different ways to learn, students find new and creative ways to solve
problems, achieve success, and become lifelong learners (Dr. Jay Smink). Teachers are trying
now to help students out when they seem like something is wrong or when the notice something
changing. Positive teacher-student relationships enable students to feel safe and secure in their
learning environments and provide support for important social and academic skills (Emily
Gallagher). When teachers form positive bonds with students, classrooms become supportive
spaces in which students can engage in academically and socially productive ways (Emily
Gallagher).
High school students like the fact that they can have heart to heart conversation with a
guidance consoler. School counselors identify the no child left behind act (Jeff Cranmore).
Technology offers some of the best opportunities for delivering instruction that engages
students in authentic learning, addresses multiple intelligences, and adapts to student's learning
styles (Mr. Franklin Schargel). Where students move from class to class and teachers have
large student loads, school counselors can be lifelines to keep students in school (Education and
the American Future). Too often in the past, educators determined which students were college
material and steered them to a college-preparatory curriculum, while steering other students to
less-rigorous programs (Education and the American Future). School counselors maintain high
expectations by making students aware of their possibilities and helping them plan a course of
study that will lead them to collage and beyond.
The high school dropout rates are going up rapidly but with all these dropouts they can be
controlled by Welcoming the family, having a bond with a student, and having a good guidance

system for students that need to talk. Unlike teachers, who only see students part of the day,
school counselors can keep an eye on a students entire program and watch for the early-warning
indicators that might signal a student is falling off track. They also work with families to help
them understand the expectations for their children and what they have to do to achieve them. I
hope with all the research that people are doing now and all the rates that are going up helps high
school students know what is really best for them and nothing is better than getting a high school
diploma and walking across your high school stage.
