distortedsenseofrealitythanMrs.WhiteinTheMonkeysPawbyW.W.Jacobs.
Whilebothcharactersblurthelinesofreality,thenarratorintheTellTaleHeart,who
boastsaboutthemurder,andtheconcealmentofthemurder,livesinamoredistorted
world.ThenarratorfromTellTaleHeartisfartherremovedfromrealitythanthe
motherfromtheMonkeysPawbecauseshemurdered,andjustifiedmurder,fromthe
wayhervictimlookedather.
ThenarratorintheTellTaleHeartisfurthestfromrealitybecauseshechooses
tomurdersomeonebecauseofthewaytheylookatthenarrator.Paragraphtwostates,
Ilovedtheoldman.Hehadneverwrongedme.Hehadnevergivenmeinsult.Forhis
goldIhadnodesire.Ithinkitwashiseye!Yes,itwasthis!Hehadtheeyeofavulture
apaleblueeye,withafilmoverit.Wheneveritfelluponme,mybloodrancoldand
sobydegreesverygraduallyImadeupmymindtotakethelifeoftheoldman,and
thusridmyselfoftheeyeforever.Thisdemonstratesthenarrator'sdeceivedreality.
Thewaytheoldmanlooksatthenarratordeterminesthechanceofhimliving.The
narratorthoughtthemanseyelookedlikeavultureanddecidedtotakehislife.The
narratorconvincesherselfthatthelooktheoldmangivesherisavalidreasonfor
murder.
AnotherreasonwhythenarratorinTellTaleHearthaslosttouchoccurswhen
shehidthedeadbodysonoonecouldfindit.Paragraphthreestates,Butyoushould
haveseenme.YoushouldhaveseenhowwiselyIproceededwithwhatcautionwith
whatforesightwithwhatdissimulationIwenttowork!Thisquoteshowshowthe
narratorisabouttohidethebody.Thenarratorissopreciseinwhatsheisdoingthat
sheisconsideredinsane.Ithentookupthreeplanksfromtheflooringofthechamber,
anddepositedallbetweenthescantlings.Ithenreplacedtheboardssocleverly,so
cunningly,thatnohumaneyenotevenhiscouldhavedetectedanythingwrong.
Thenarratorhidesthebodyunderthefloorandfeelssoconfidentinherselfthatno
humaneyecouldfindit.
Mrs.WhitefromtheMonkeysPawhasalsolosttouchwithreality.Sheactually
believesthewishesdirectedatthemonkeyspawwillcometrue.Page261states,
"WISH!shecriedinastrongvoice.Itisfoolishandwicked,hefaltered.WISH!
repeatedhiswife.ThisshowshowMrs.Whiteissostrickenwithgriefthatsheiswilling
tobelievethefairytailthatisthemonkeyspaw.AlthoughMrs.Whitesthoughtsarefar
fromreality,thenarratorfromTellTaleHearthasamuchmoredistortedsenseof
reality.Afterall,itisunderstandableforaparenttolosetouchwithrealityaftertheloss
ofachild.
Inconclusion,thecharactersinbothstoriesdealwithmurder.However,inTell
TaleHeart,thenarratorsrealityismuchmoredistortedthanMrs.Whitesfrom
MonkeysPaw.Committingmurderforsomethingsoridiculousasalookisisfar
worseandunsettlingthanMrs.Whitesdistotedrealityduetotragedyandgrief.
