Symphony in G Minor (Mozart)

Structure

This piece is structured in the sonata form, which consists of the

Exposition (Bars 1-100), Development (Bars 101-164) and
Recapitulation (Bars 164-184).
Within the exposition there are other sections for example, the 1st
subject (Bars 1-28), Bridge Passage (Bars 28-43), 2nd subject (Bars
44-72) and Codetta (Bars 72-100).
Also within the recapitulation there are many sections: the 1st
subject (Bars 164-184), Bridge passage (Bars 184-227), 2nd subject
(Bars 227-260) and Coda (Bars 261-299).

Melody

The mood of this whole piece is exciting, serious and dramatic as it

has a fast tempo.
There are many different ideas throughout this piece, for example in
Bars 1-3; there is a repeated idea with an upward leap of a sixth
followed by a descending stepwise pattern.
Also in Bars 5-9 the composer has repeated the sequence in Bars 14, using repetition and making the melody more memorable.

Texture/Instrumentation

Various textures are explored throughout this piece, for example in

Bars 88-100 are clearly homophonic texture as many different parts
are layered together.
Also in Bars 16-19 there are doubling of parts in the strings.
In this piece there is no brass or percussion, which fits in with the
classical era. The instruments mainly consist of the strings and
woodwind family.

Tonality/Harmony

This piece is in the key of G minor, so that is the key that it starts off
in in the 1st subject (tonic key). It then continues to modulate in the
bridge passage to its relative major and stays in Ball the way
through the 2nd subject.
In the recapitulation the piece continues to stay in the tonic key (G
minor) even through the bridge passage and 2nd subject in order to
finish in the tonic key.

The mood throughout this piece is pathetique and is demonstrated

in the use of semitones and chromatic sequences, for example bars
56-57.
