1. Practice solving different types of subtraction problems using part-part-whole processes. 2. Reinforce checking for errors does this make sense?

Represent and solve simple addition and subtraction
problems using a range of strategies including counting on, partitioning and rearranging parts (ACMNA015)
Key learnings
Addition and subtraction part-part-whole (partitioning),
process and operation, representation concrete and abstract.
Differentiation
1. Check for understanding through questioning in
discussions. 2. Use materials to demonstrate and model and reinforce process of understanding.
Warm up
Remind students of partitioning and using number facts to help
solve addition problems. (use this to check for understanding). Talk about addition strategies that we already know: counting on, counting by tens, using doubles. Whiteboard rainbow facts: ask students to write their rainbow facts on their white board.
Example 1: Addition problem
Display a word problem on the IWB.
Read the problem to the students, and ask them to read it altogether. Ask them to identify whats important in this problem. Ask a student to come up and circle the important information on the board. Put the parts in the boxes (drawing). Ask what do we need to do next? (add them together) Draw the parts in the whole box and count. Ask the students to put the information into the number sentence. Repeat again with another example.
Example 2: Subtraction Problem
Display a word problem on the IWB.
Read the problem to the students, and ask them to read it altogether. Ask them to identify whats important in this problem. Ask a student to come up and circle the important information on the board. Put the whole in the box (drawing). Ask what do we need to do next? (identify the part that is taken away) Draw the part in the box and count. Ask the students to put the information into the number sentence. Repeat again with another example on the IWB.
Example 3: Students to model the work
Hand out PPW mats and coutners.
Ask students to identify the whole. Count out the correct number of counters and place in the whole box. Identify the part and put counters in the part box. How many are to be in the missing part box? Write the number sentence. Provide another example and work through it together as a group. If students are understanding, then hand out the individual cards to check. If students need more scaffolding, the repeat with more examples. Key Focus areas
Look for opportunities for positive reinforcement with an
explanation. Focus on keeping students on task and redirecting to work where needed (Correction skills). Use selective praise to demonstrate desired behaviours.

Check on progress while students are contributing to discussions.
Make a mental note of the students that may require more help during the next lesson.
