Mathematics

Sort, order, compare, and describe objects according to characteristics or attribute(s).

8.A.ECb Recognize, duplicate, extend, and create simple patterns in various formats.
Specific Lesson Objective(s):
Different shapes and sizes of animals (Book)
Identify and describe attributes, patterns, and relationships in objects.
Sort objects by a single attributes.
Match similar objects by putting all the toys cars together or lining up plates on a table.
Material need including handouts (list and /or attach):
Different size shapes, animals, and rocks.
Toy cars
Different size plates
CDs
Other Resources:
If the children are having problem matching items:
Create a simple A-B pattern using classroom objects

Children can match, sort, and put into pattern thing around the classroom for instance in the
block area or matching pencils and crayons.
Detailed methods sequence (step-by-step methods and student learning activities):
Children will sit in large group on the carpet rug listening to the story.
Teacher will read the book Different shapes and sizes of animals.
Teacher told the children to go over to the small tables for activity time.
Children went over to small tables that was set up with different shapes and sizes on them.
Teacher asked the children to match up the same animal together.
Teacher told the children to sort out the different patterns together.
One by one the teacher will ask the children to line up the different size plates.
Detailed Accommodations and Modifications for students with mild-moderate disabilities,
and Adaptations for severe disabilities- (All, most. Some learning pyramid).
The teacher will work close to the children that need help in matching their pattern, shapes, and
sizes. Peers will help children with hand over hand if needed.

The children will continue work on their shapes and sizes throughout the semester.
Result will be recorded on a checklist and observation log that will be in the child portfolio.

The children will be able to recognize different shapes and sizes. Sort objects according to two
different characteristics and compare and describe various objects.
Alterative directions for using the lesson or similar lessons in the future:
Read the book Different shapes and sizes of animals
Have the children in large group on the carpet rug.
