STANDARD TEST PROCEDURE

ACIDITY OF OIL
PURPOSE:
To describe the procedure for the Acidity of Oil .
(1) To acquaint the new staff with procedures adopted for the Acidity of Oil .
(2) Keep updated about the changes in the procedures for the Acidity of Oil .
(3) To serve as a training document.
SCOPE:
The document explains the standard procedure for the analysis
(1) Acidity of Oil by Volumetric Method
(2) To arrange Standard solution for calibration / standardize.
PROCEDURE:
Phenolphthalein Indicator solution.
(1) Take 1.0 gm of Phenolphthalein powder on a butter paper.
(2) Transfer it to a 250-ml Beaker.
(3) Add 100 ml Methanol and dissolve it.
(4) Store in Plastic bottle. Put stopper and label on the bottle.
(5) Use the Solution within One month.
Standard N/100 KOH Solution.
(1) Take 0.56 gm of Potassium Hydroxide pallets on a butter paper.
(2) Transfer it to a 1000-ml Measuring flask.
(3) Add D.M.Water, dissolve it and make volume 1000 ml with D.M.Water.
(4) Store in Plastic bottle. Put stopper and label on the bottle.
Standard N/100 Succinic Acid Solution.
(1) Take 0.59045 gm of Succinic Acid Powder on a butter paper.
(2) Transfer it to a 1000-ml Measuring flask.
(3) Add D.M.Water, dissolve it and make volume 1000 ml with D.M.Water.
(4) Store in Plastic bottle. Put stopper and label on the bottle.
Method of Analysis.
(1) Take 10 gm Oil Sample in 250 ml Conical Flask.
(2) Add 25 ml D.M.Water + 25 ml Methanol (Neutralize)

(3) Heat @ 60 C Temp. For 20-25 Minutes.
(4) Cool it at Room Temperature.
(5) 2-3 drop of phenolphthalein indicator.
(6) Triturate against N/100 KOH Solution.

EndPoint should be Light Pink Permanent.

Note the reading Of Consume N/100 KOH. (A ml)

Calibration
(1) Take 10 ml prepared N/100 Succini Acid Solution in 250 ml Beaker.
(2) Add Phenolphthalein as an Indicator.
(3) Triturate against N/100 KOH Solution
(4) Color change Colorless to Light Pink.
(5) Reading should be 10.
(6) Find out Factor from this formula.
(7) ml of N/100 Succinic Acid / ml Of Consume N/100 KOH
