Reflection

(Minimum of 3-4 sentences per question)

1. Briefly describe the field experience. What did you learn about technology coaching and technology leadership from
completing this field experience?
This field experience came about from a casual conversation with a teacher at one of the elementary schools in my district. She wanted to help her students to
participate in a TED Talk-style competition in which the students would discuss the ways in which STEM was preparing them for their future careers. I helped
her plan the lessons and facilitate the first lessons, to help her overcome her hesitations over teaching her elementary students about a new technology tool. I
learned the importance of listening to teachers to know where to start in assisting them. With technology, I have observed that some teachers, especially multidecade veteran teachers like the one with whom I was working, are inherently fearful--mainly because they worry that they will do something wrong or will not
be able to address any issues that may arise. Thus, I found that I was able to both coach and lead this particular teacher in uncovering her own technology
leadership skills in guiding her students through this process.
2. How did this learning relate to the knowledge (what must you know), skills (what must you be able to do) and dispositions
(attitudes, beliefs, enthusiasm) required of a technology facilitator or technology leader? (Refer to the standards you selected
above. Use the language of the PSC standards in your answer and reflect on all 3knowledge, skills, and dispositions.)
Knowledge I realized that I must know how to use the technologies I wish to showcase in order to teach the teacher and students how to use TouchCast to
produce quality videos. I must also be able to provide guidance and support to the teacher with lesson planning and lesson facilitation.
Skills I must have clear communication skills, the ability to learn on my own, the ability to learn on my feet, and the ability to provide clear guidance to
others so that they may become self-sufficient in utilizing technology themselves.
Dispositions I also recognized that I must have a pleasant disposition toward all that I do especially when working with someone who is feeling slightly
insecure and is working outside of their comfort zone. I have observed that some teachers feel uncomfortable asking for help for fear that it will appear that
they are incompetent, which is not the case. Thus, I found that I had to also have a reassuring disposition toward the teacher I was helping.
3. Describe how this field experience impacted school improvement, faculty development or student learning at your school.
How can the impact be assessed?
This field experience will impact schools with regard to their ability to guide students in the effective use of technology in the classroom. Furthermore, as this
teacher and I were able to present our experience to teachers at the Georgia STEM Forum, we were able to impact the faculty development of other teachers at
other schools. This impact can be assessed in the emails I have since received asking for collaborative help with regard to including the use of technology in
the lesson plans of other teachers within my district.
