Learning Target: I can identify a

simile and metaphor. I can give an example of a
simile and metaphor.
1)

Bellringer: Review: Write a

correctly punctuated,
correctly capitalized
complex sentence about
your break.

2) Discuss Brain Buzzer.

3) Learn about similes

4) Learn about metaphors

A simile makes a comparison between two

unlike NOUNS using the words like or as.

Ex: The night was LIKE a black curtain

surrounding me.

A metaphor makes a comparison between

two unlike NOUNS stated directly. (Uses
verbs of being such as is, are, were,
was, and am.)
Ex: The night WAS a black curtain
surrounding me.
Which is a simile? Which is a metaphor?
Which is neither?

1. The dog gnawed on my leg like a chew toy.

2. The football player ran at me like a
hurricane.
3. The math test was a total nightmare.
4. I was as hot in the elevator as a man
crawling through the Gobi Desert.
5. The car was a bolt of lightning flashing
down the highway.

6. I really like my teacher.

7. The dog was fluffy and furry.

Ex: The night was like a black curtain surrounding

me.

*First you have two objects that you are trying

to compare (or show a similarity between):
the night / a black curtain

*You are comparing them (showing their

similarity) by saying they are like each
other.
*Why does this work? What qualities do the
night and a black curtain share?
Notice the following wouldnt work: The night
surrounded me like a pineapple. Night and
pineapples dont share similarities, so the

simile doesnt work.

Heres another example:

The dolphin was like a bullet ripping through

the ocean.
Or
The dolphin was a bullet ripping through the
ocean.

Which is the simile and which is the

metaphor?

Which similarities do a bullet and a dolphin

share that makes this an effective simile and
metaphor?

Notice, if you said, The dolphin was like a

brick ripping through the ocean it wouldnt
work because dolphins and bricks don't share
similar qualities:

The two things being compared need to be

UNLIKE each other, but have to have a similar
quality, to make the simile or metaphor
effective.

Notice this simile and how if seems rather

lame:

The dolphin was like a fish ripping through

the water.

Dolphins and fish are too similar to compare.

Same goes for this one:

The cat was like the dog curled up on my lap.

The key is to try and find similarities in objects

that are UNLIKE.
The cat was like a pile of cotton on my lap.

What are we comparing? How are the

two objects similar? Is the sentence a
simile or metaphor?

1)
My brother was a snake if you
woke him up early from his nap.
2)
The football player was a brick
wall.
3)
The 3 day old sandwich tasted like
a chunk of cardboard.
4)
Lifes like a road that we travel
each day.
5)
Passing time is like sand slipping
through my fingers.
6)
Jerrys brain was a box of rocks.

*What youre choosing to use for your

simile or metaphor have to be
universally known to have a particular
quality.

Example:
The old movie stars stomach looked like
jiggly Jell-O.
That works. Jell-O jiggles, it is blubberylooking.

This wont work:

The old movie stars stomach looked like
a Ferrari

Why doesnt this work???

Helpful Hint: When trying to write your own

metaphor, write a simile, then take out the
words like or as and add the words was,
or is, or am.

Example:
The teacher yelled at me like an angry bear

The teacher WAS an angry bear when he

yelled at me.

Or

The sun sparkled like diamonds on the

waters surface.

The sun IS sparkling diamonds on the waters

surface.

Which of the following is an example of a

simile?
A)
The car honked at me when I darted in
front of it.

B)
I like to sip coffee on a cold winter
morning.
C)
I was wondering if my teacher would
give me detention.
D)
The cat was like a flash of lightning
running past me.

metaphor?
A)
The road went on forever and ever.
B)
The dog was a monster trying to break
free.
C)
The teacher was like a screaming
eagle in my ear.
D)
The penguin waddled across the frozen
lake.

Simile?
A)
The dinosaurs teeth were like razors
of death.
B)
The pumpkin was scary after it was
carved.
C)
Cole liked all the help he was getting.

D)

forgot to shower.

Metaphor?

them.
B)

puked.
C)
School was a torture device ready to
destroy my brain.
D)

NowCreate your own simile and metaphor
from magazines:
*One simile using two magazine cut-outs.
*One metaphor using magazine cut-outs.
Example:

Simile: The giraffe was like a skyscraper

among the trees.

Metaphor: The sharks teeth were deadly

knives ready to slice through my leg.
