The coding activity in class used episodes from The Andy Griffith Show, Full

House, and Hannah Montana. All episodes were observed, coded. The analysis began
with the identification of the themes emerging from the raw data, a process sometimes
referred to as "open coding" (Strauss and Corbin, 1990).. A few themes were prevalent
throughout each of the episodes: the change in appropriate interactions on the basis of age
and the difficulties of being a single parent raising children.
All three episodes that were examined involved one or more paternal figures, but
no constant maternal figure for the children. Many of the issues that arise throughout
each story could be attributed to the lack of guidance from this end of parenthood. Some
children probably would have reacted differently when confronted with the challenging
situation if they had witnessed interactions between their parents, or could gain insight
from more than one parent. The problems tend to go unnoticed until the children are
completely submerged in the situation. This could also be from one parent raising the
children and being unable to stay in touch with everything they go through. This resulted
in the inappropriate interactions the children have with others.
The findings were developed after examining the main themes and conflicts
within each show. The results would differ if we were able to view more episodes and
analyze other challenges and conflicts that present themselves throughout the characters
interactions with one another.
