Speech Outline
Part A: Audience and Occasion Analysis
Specific Goal: My audience will learn the importance of the Stanley Cup in the National Hockey League.
Pattern of Organization: Ive chosen the topical pattern of organization because I am explaining what
the Stanley Cup is and why it is important.
Audience Analysis: I am going to use a Power Point presentation to give some animation to the speech,
I will also try and bring up some fun, lesser known topics about the Stanley Cup and its history.
Occasion Analysis: My speech is appropriate because it is informative and will teach a subject that is
not as well known here in Utah.
Part B: Speech Outline
Speech Title: The Stanley Cup; What is it and why is it important?
Introduction:
I. Hook (attention-getter): What is the Stanley Cup you might ask? It is the centerpiece of the entire
National Hockey League and is the most sought after trophy in North America.
II. I am not exactly an expert but I am a major hockey fan, so I guess you could say Im a semi-expert on
the Stanley Cup.
III. Thesis: My goal for you today is to teach you some important facts about the Stanley Cup and give
you a greater understanding as to why the competition is so fierce, and the trophy so coveted. .
IV. Preview: List your main points here in very brief form (no more than 5 words per point).
1: Brief history of the Stanley Cup
2: Who has won the cup and its travels.

Body:
I. First major point: The Stanley Cup; what it is, how it came to be, and how it has changed throughout the years.
A. Who is Lord Stanley?
1. Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston, and Earl of Derby.
2. Lord Stanley purchased the trophy that is now the Stanley Cup to be presented to the
championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada. (Hockey Hall of Fame, available at

3. Since donating the Stanley Cup, Lord Stanley has become an important athletic and cultural
icon in Canada.
B. The Stanley Cup is the most sought after trophy in professional sports.
1. The Stanley Cup has been competed for since 1893.
2. The National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup in 1910.
3. Starting in 1926, only teams from the NHL have competed for the Stanley Cup.

C. The Stanley Cup has changed a few times throughout the years.
1. The original Stanley Cup was 7 1/2 tall and 11 1/2 wide.
2. Tiered rings were periodically added to the bottom of the bowl in the beginning.
3. The original Stanley Cup is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, said to be too brittle to be presented.
4. Long narrow band were added in 1927
5. Uneven bands then replaced those in 1947.
6. The names of each winning team member are inscribed on the Cup, making bands readily
removable so that new bands can replace them.

are many teams that have gone to battle to win the Stanley Cup.]
II. Second major point: Who has won the Stanley Cup and the tradition held with winning the Cup.
A. Who has been the most successful in their pursuit for the Stanley Cup?
1. The first team to ever be awarded the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic

2. Since the 1914-1915 season, the trophy has been won a combined 95 times by 18 teams.

3. The Montreal Canadiens have won a record of 23 Stanley Cups.
4. The 2nd winningest team is the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13 Stanley Cups.
B. A tradition that will never die.
1. A unique tradition with winning the Stanley Cup, is that each player on the championship team
gets to spend 24 hours in possession of the Stanley Cup the summer after winning the championship
game.
2. Hockey is the only sport to hold this tradition of allowing its players to have that opportunity.
3. Each member of the winning team have their name inscribed on the trophy. This is the ONLY
sport that provides this opportunity
4. There are more than 2,200 different names engraved on the Stanley Cup, including players,

5. To provide space for new names to be added, every 13 years, a new ring is added to the
bottom of the Cup.
C. The many adventures of the Stanley Cup
1. Accompanied by an NHL official trustee of the Cup, a team member can take the cup pretty
much wherever they want.
a. The cup has been in many countries including; Russia, Japan, and Switzerland
b. It has also been in igloos in Canadas newest territory, Nunavut.
2. There are some crazy stories of the Stanley Cup as well.
a. One team had to change a flat tire and left the Cup in a snow bank on the side of the
road.
b. Another team left the Cup at a photography studio, where is ended up as a planter pot
until hockey officials retrieved it.
3. There are many other things that the Stanley Cup has doubled as;
a. A champagne glass
b. A popcorn bucket
c. A water bowl for both dogs and horses

d. It was even used for the baptism of the Colorado Avalanches Sylvain Lefebvres first
child.
Conclusion: With the importance of the Stanley Cup to the National Hockey League and fans alike, it is important
to remember the history of the Stanley Cup and show support for our favored teams. Throughout history the
Stanley Cup has changed and the significance has only become greater.
I. Lord Stanley started something bigger than he may have imagined when first purchasing the Stanley
Cup trophy. With all of the teams that have won the Cup and the many places and things the Cup has done.
II. I hope I have taught you the significance the Stanley Cup has, in not only my life, but many others,
especially those of the organizations striving to win the Stanley Cup. And some of the basic facts of what the
Stanley Cup is and how it came about.
III. As in the words of the great Mike Lange, and echoed by all who love the great sport of hockey, Lord
Stanley, Lord Stanley, bring me that brandy!
