Invitation or Introduction:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will place a stack of flash cards on the table for the students. The
teacher will then ask the students questions about two-syllable words. The questioning will
engage the students and get them intrigued about the lesson. Okay boys and girls, today we will
be learning about two-syllable words. Can anyone please tell me what a two-syllable word is?
What about an example of a two-syllable word? Thats pretty good friends! An example I can
think of that is a two-syllable word is birthday. Clap you hands and say it with me, birth-day!
Great job friends! (Teacher Transitions to Modeling)
Teacher Modeling:
The lesson today will focus on two-syllable words: reading those words and breaking them into
their parts. The teacher will begin modeling what she would like the students to do in the lesson.
Boys and girls, I am going to show you what I would like for you do today with two-syllable
words. As you can see, I have placed a stack of index cards on the table. You will take turns in
your group grabbing a card, reading the word on the card, and clap each time your chin moves
as you read the word. Teacher models for the students what they are to do. Watch me. Birth (clap)
day (clap). I clapped twice when reading this word to show that the word has two-syllables. Does
everyone understand the directions before I begin letting you have an opportunity to practice?
Okay, great! Lets begin practicing those two-syllable words. Students begin pulling index cards
from the stack and clapping the two-syllables in the words.
Independent Practice:
The students will take turns drawing a card from the stack of flashcards and identify the two
syllables in the word. They will continue this process until they have completed and gone through
the entire stack of flashcards. The teacher will circulate the room and help students if necessary.
The teacher will observe students and see who is struggling with the concept of two-syllable

words. Once the students have completed the stack of flashcards, they will have an opportunity to
play on the iPad using the K-2 syllable game on learninggamesforkids.com without teacher
assistance. This will reinforce the two-syllable flashcards and help the students have a concrete
understanding of two-syllable words.
Assessment and Reflection:
The teacher will walk around the classroom and see what students are struggling with regarding
two-syllable words as a formative assessment check. Once the students have completed the stack
of flashcards and worked on the K-2 syllable game on the iPad, they will complete a two-syllable
words matching worksheet as an assessment. They teacher will collect this worksheet as proof of
understanding two-syllable words.
