Tools and Resources: iPads or laptops for students, Google Docs Spreadsheet (G-mail accounts for all
the students), internet access, dry erase marker/board
Vocabulary Words: anxious, furious, depressed, eager, startled, frustrated, remorseful, ashamed,
disappointed
Activity Preparation: Make sure that all students have a computer or laptop and have a G-mail account
set up on it. Before class gets started, help the students open their spreadsheet before class begins.
Description:
Warm-Up: To introduce the idea of feelings, have students generate a list of feelings they know and write
the list on the board.
Have students open up their vocabulary Google Document Spreadsheet on their laptops/iPads. Have
students type up the vocabulary word list in a column. (Students will be keeping a running log of all the

new words theyve learned.) Then move to the board. Discuss how these are all adjectives. Remind the
students about synonyms and how these words are synonyms with small differences from other emotion
words that they probably know. Discuss each word on the word list. Students must write either a brief
definition or a few words to remind them of the meaning for each word.
Activity 2 (practice): Before the start of this activity, discuss how tone and body language are often used
to convey feelings. To test the assessment of the words, the class will play a game. First, give all of the
students a sticky note for them to keep their own score on. The students will then take turns reading the
sentences on the cards (that I have written) with the proper emotion (that is indicated on the cards). It will
be up to the student reading to give emotion and use their body language to properly demonstrate the
emotion. The rest of the class will put the flash card out that they think the reader is trying to convey. If
they are correct, then they will get a point. After the reader reveals what emotion they were trying to
convey, we will discuss that emotion to make sure everyone knows the meaning. Whoever has the most
points at the end of the game wins!
Activity 1 (assessment): To practice the words, have students write a sentence down that they might say
when they are feeling a particular emotion (in the third column on their vocabulary spreadsheet page).
Then, have the students read their sentences to their partner and have the partner guess which emotion the
person is feeling. Students will then share their document with the teacher for assessment.
