Lesson Plan #1

Instructional Method: (Direct) Skills Teaching

Lesson Title: Intro to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
Learning Targets:
I can strike an arc using a 60-10 and 70-18 electrode
I can run a straight bead on a flat plate and pad a plate utilizing 60-10 and 70-18 electrode
Standards Met:

PSTS.09.05.a
Engagement

Content/Strategy

Students are given 3 crackers and a can of cheese wiz (to share with
their table) and shown a picture of SMAW beads ran on a flat plate.
Students are asked to mimic this bead as best as they can with their
crackers and cheese wiz. Students are then shown a tee joint weld
and they are asked to mimic this as well.
After students practice with the crackers and cheese wiz in the
classroom they will move into the power lab and change into their
welding attire including a welding coat, welding gloves, safety
glasses, and welding helmet (do-rag optional).
To beginGive demonstrations on striking the arc and ask students to practice
with the welder turned off to demonstrate the correct angle and
motion while I watch them.
Hold the rod between 0 and 16 degrees, with the rod leaning towards
the direction of travel.
Three ways how to strike an arc:
1. Flick up from an edge
2. Strike like a match/ scratch it
3. Tap it straight down, then back up
Once students have shown the teacher how they are going to strike
the arc, students will turn on their machine to the correct setting,
and practice striking an arc with the power on
After students demonstrate they know how to strike an arcI will demonstrate how to start a bead and the correct motion

students should make while they are using SMAW.

Students will begin arc welding by creating short beads while I
observe and show them what they may be doing incorrectly. Once
students feel comfortable alone they will continue to lay beads on a
flat plate. Students should compare their welds with industry
standard welds which are posted on the shop classroom wall.
Length of arc: The correct arc length varies with each electrode and
application. As a good starting point, arc length should not exceed
the diameter of the metal portion (core) of the electrode.
Angle of travel: Stick welding in the flat, horizontal and overhead
position uses a "drag" or "backhand" welding technique. Hold the
rod perpendicular to the joint and tilt the top of the electrode in the
direction of travel approximately 5 to 15 degrees.
Manipulation: manipulate the electrode from side to side creating a
continuous series of partially overlapping circles, or in a "Z," semicircle or whip-and-pause pattern.
Students should start to see the differences in the welds, and note the
differences on a piece of paper as they go along

Closing

At the end of class students turn in a piece of paper which describes

how their welds are different from the industry standard SMAW
welds shown on the posters. They should identify if they were
moving too slow, too quick, if the machine was running too hot, or
too cold.
