The month before last, I had a boat called

Bloodhound on the cover. Its a boat Id always
wanted to write about because, in addition to it
being an amazing wooden sailboat, it is something
of a story of triumph. Bob Gilbert saw an image
of a boat from the 1800s and said, That needs
to live again, and through his arduous efforts, it
did. Bloodhound is essentially a living work of art
that one guy insisted be created. Subsequently it
became a member of his family and a source of
adventure for decades.

When I heard the news, I knew I wanted to write

something about him, but didnt want an obituary.
I thought about what a life like Bobs means to
those who never met him, in this case my local
readership. I came up with this:

It broke my heart to learn that Bob passed away

soon after our interview. What I didnt mention This mans journey was about pursuing what was
in the story was Bob couldnt speak during the meaningful to him and through that, he changed
discussion; his voice was just a raspy whisper his and affected the lives of so many. He was inspired

incredibly upbeat, open and down to earth. Prior to were not easy, but wouldnt quit until they were

was an Oscar winning documentary filmmaker, an good better than good and, in the end, that is
architect, a painter and a respected sculpture with what a meaningful life is. Let us all get out and
works still in museums. He was a guy who would try to do the same in our own

Political Issue Concerning Liveaboards

Recreational Boaters of California has submitted formal comments to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, urging USFWS to include live-aboards as recreational vessels for purposes of access to
services funded by the Clean Vessel Act [CVA].
RBOC is concerned with the interpretation of the USFWS that recreational vessels used as liveaboards [anchor outs, and houseboats] are not considered recreational vessels by the federal
government and are therefore not eligible for use of equipment or services funded by the CVA grant
including vessel pump-outs, pump-out boats [mobile boat-to-boat services], pump-out services, or
any equipment operated and maintained with CVA grants.
In California, the CVA program has funded construction of hundreds of vessel pump-outs, most of
which are used by both pleasure vessels and live-aboards.
RBOC is concerned that the USFWS interpretation does not allow live-aboards to use the CVA
funded equipment [vessel pump-outs] or allow CVA funded pump-out boats or services. The
exclusion of recreational vessels used as live-aboards could have a significantly negative impact on
water quality and would be detrimental to the objectives of the CVA.
The USFWS regulatory proceeding is Docket Number FWSR9WSR20150006.

Legality of a Really
Long Snorkle
Question: I made my own snorkel using a
flexible hose that is about five feet long. No air
supplying motor or any device is attached to it.
Its just a long flexible hose with a check valve
in it. If I use it to fish would I be in violation of
any regulations? I am aware of the regulation
prohibiting the use of scuba gear or surfacesupplied air.

Answer: Although this would be legal, using

this type of snorkel would be very dangerous
because you must be able to displace used air
in your snorkel. You could be seriously harmed
from breathing from a long snorkel because the
air volume in the snorkel makes it difficult to
displace exhaled air. Rebreathing used air can
cause death or great bodily harm to a diver. This
is why you do not see longer snorkels sold by
dive shops.

Solo round the World - Antarctica to Starboard

Rhode Island sailor/adventurer Joe Harris will be making a solo, non-stop,

unassisted, round-the-world record attempt going from Newport, RI to
Newport RI, leaving Antarctica to starboard, aboard his Class 40 sailboat
GryphonSolo2 (GS2).
The attempt will be made in accordance with the rules of the World Sailing
Speed Record Council, who will time the start and finish in Newport.
Additionally, a WSSRC Black Box will be installed on the boat, the data
from which would be used to ratify any claim by GS2 that the existing
record of 137d, 20h, 01m, 57s, set by Chinese sailor Guo Chuan in 2013,
has been broken.

cleaning. I will have to sail the boat quickly and wisely to beat the record,
hopefully making no mistakes that would lead to damage to the boat.
Harris is an experiences solo sailor. He has participated in in the Atlantic
Cup and the Newport-Bermuda race. Then Joe again competed in the allClass 40 Atlantic Cup, and then in the Bermuda 1-2.
Follow Joes travels at www.gryphonsolo2.com

I have been hoping, planning and dreaming of racing around the world
since I was about 20 and now I am 55- not sure how that happened!
Said Harris. This will no doubt be the greatest physical and mental
challenge I have ever faced, and I would be lying if I said that the prospect
of being alone on the great oceans of the world for four months was
not an intimidating thought. It is. And the preparation at times seems
overwhelming- but in the end, this will provide me the greatest test of my
mettle that I can imagine.
Solo sailing means 100% personal responsibility and self-reliance. It
means no job too big and no job too small- everything from navigating,
to sail changes and trimming to repairing what breaks, to cooking and

10 Gift Ideas For Boaters

The person who has a boater in their life around the holiday season is
lucky. There are vast choices, boaters always always need something
and they are sooo happy they didnt have to fork out the cash for this
overpriced thing. So, with that in mind what kind of cool gifts can be
gotten for the boating breed?

10. Handheld GPS.

Maybe this person has the nice mounted full color Garmin setup there on
the pedestal or instrument rack, but an easy to grab waterproof handheld
GPS is great for the extended dinghy ride or the fogged in passage from
the mooring to the dinghy-dock. Or maybe this person doesnt have the
kind of boat that has the nice set up and they already have a handheld
GPS. Well, get them the next model up. Theyll have a backup and the
new model. Theyre like sunglasses good to have a spare kicking around.

9. A Better First Aid Kit

Its not the sexiest gift but a good stocking stuffer that youll be glad you
picked up. Chances are this boater friend of yours has a first aid kit on
board, but half the time, theyre not all that great. Check it out and if you
see a plastic box that has three no name band-aids, a very small tube of an
ointment youve never heard of and some gauze that looks weirdly thin
upgrade time. Instead of the normal $20 one, spring for something in the
$50-60 zone. Itll have extra goodies. Its the greatest feeling in the world
to have a situation at sea and realize you can deal with it easily because
youre prepared.

8. New Docklines and Fenders

Some boaters will go to the trouble of breaking out the acetone and
scrubbing their fenders, so they look all clean and white, but most of us
just casually notice how disgusting they are and move on. Same goes for
docklines the jet fuel falling from the sky eventually makes the lines
turn brown with filth. They feel gross on the hands because they are gross.
Replacing dock lines is wonderful. There is something new-underwearish about cleaning the boat and having nice fenders and spotless new
docklines. Its one of those things that are great gifts because no normal
boater wants to replace something that works just because its dirty. And
dont start with the: why dont you just soak the lines, talk. Its just cool
8

to get nice new lines

7. Foulies

Heres another item that, for many boaters, might be in a state of

disappointment and/or disrepair. Maybe the zipper is salted shut on the
bottom, or theyre insanely stained and ripped or there is just better stuff
out there now. This person has daughters older than those things and the
new materials are always a little lighter, a little warmer and have some
kind of a new pocket or clip or gizmo that will make them happy. Its
another thing thats great to get as a gift because the stoic boater will often
make do.

6. Knife

Boaters use knivesknives rust or get crusty and became less than
efficient. A new knife, say a leatherman, is bound to have some things that
the old one didnt, plus this new one operates so easily and sweet! Things
that have purpose make boaters happy.

5. Sirius Signal SOS Light - Flare Alternative

Flares are a mandatory part of boating but they go stale, plus not everyone
knows exactly how to work the things because theyve never been in any
trouble. Im sure Ill figure it out as the water rises, many of us think.
But alas, there is a new device thats born from the question: is there
anything else we can use besides pyrotechnic flaming flares that have
expiration dates? Well, yes there is a Coast Guard Approved SOS signal
called SOS Distress Light made by Sirius Signal. Its battery operated and
meets all the criteria the CG lays down for a distress signal. Its compact,
clean and easy to operate. No more flaresgood gift.

4. Nice Pair of Sunglasses

Good quality sunglasses are more than a means to complete your look, they
are important protection for your precious eyeballs. There are too many
sailors out there who have literally cooked their eyes by not covering them
on all of those sunny days. The beauty of the sunglasses gift is that its
always cool to have a second or third pair. An indulgence some wouldnt
bestow upon themselves but will welcome once unwrapped. Polarized and
dark by the way

The Mariner - Issue 154

2015

3. Professionally Shot Underway Photograph

Any self-respecting boater has an unhealthy love and adoration of their

boat. If this is the case for the one youre shopping for, they want a nice
photograph of the boat being a boat. So many boaters dont have this
because were always in the boat and rarely outside of it and watching
her make her way through the water. That idea is actually a fear for most
boatersAnyway, maybe they have a crappy one that someone took, or
something of the boat at the dock but a nice shot of the boat underway is
really cool.

2. Cast Off for Catalina/Mexico Videos

This video was made quite a while ago, but it holds up for folks that
havent made the voyage to Catalina yet or have only go to the same spot
on the island over and over. Most boaters in this area are curious about

scouting the entire islands and this video provides really good information
for checking out Catalina more thoroughly. Its laid out in a friendly and
digestible waygood stuff. But, if Catalina is old hat to your boater
friend, the same people made one called Cast Off for Mexico which is
equally good. Theyre available on Amazon and at West Marine.

1. A Gift Certificate For a Complete Boat Detailing

Detailing a boat is hard work and something most dont want to do.
However having a detailed boat is something almost everyone wants. So,
call up Dirty Yachts or Dennis Boat Maintenance and have them make
that baby shine like a diamond. Detailing is a little expensive and therefore
a great gift for the reluctant spender (trans; cheapskate). Its good for the
boat and its good for the soul to have a boat all waxed, sealed, looking
beautiful.

The Art of Buying Used

By Captain Richard Schaefer

am a long time advocate of buying used. Back in 1973,

I learned a very painful life lesson, when I traded in my
beloved and beautiful 1967 RS/SS Camaro with the Mickey
Thompson Package for a new lemon yellow, Chevy LUV
pickup truck. Sheesh! Talk about a stupid kid. If I were
Japanese I think I would have committed Hara-kiri.

Well, my beautiful 67 Camaro would be worth $60,000+

today, and that piece of crap LUV truck wouldnt bring $25 at the scrap
yard. I have never bought a new anything since...well, except socks and
underwear. But the way prices are goin up all the time Im considering
the Goodwill store for those as well...hey, thats why theres hot water and
bleach.
Now, if youre so loaded with loot that the president of your bank comes
out to greet you and invite you to lunch whenever you walk thru the
door, stop reading now. You dont need my advice, as a matter of fact I
need yours... call me - well do lunch. However, if youre like most of us
who work hard for our money, then pay attention. And pay really close
attention if youre a boater, because there are big bucks to be saved when
buying a used boat instead of a new one.
As a general rule, pleasure boats lose about 25% of their value by the end
of the first year of ownership. By five years, that loss has grown to 50%,
and about 3-5% annual depreciation thereafter! The bottom is hit at about
20 years and the price remains fairly stable after that. That downward
spiral translates into the loss of a lot of your hard earned chips in the game
of life.
Well, I hope that not so cheery news has persuaded you to buy a boat thats
over five-years old, which has already taken the high velocity depreciation
hit. Now, lets talk about the issues and concerns associated with bottom
feeding in the boat market.
The first step is to educate yourself regarding your local market. There
are various price guides on line, but pore over local boat publications and
listings. Boat brokers and agents are a great help, but educate yourself
first; become a knowledgeable and selective buyer. Even if you plan on
working with a broker, it really helps to know what you want before you
start seriously shopping.
Depending on your level of experience, you may want to check out the
FSBO (For Sale By Owner) ads/listings in your area before working
with an agent or broker. However, I am of the opinion that a buyer can

10

work with a broker and still keep an eye on private party listings. But,
always remember, if the broker or agent is the procuring cause of the
sale they are entitled to their commission. If youre working with a broker,
be a loyal client, and if youre unhappy with the arrangement or the service
find another broker to represent you.
Remember, a broker is more than just a salesperson. A good broker/sales
agent will provide information and advice on surveyors, documentation,
contracts, mechanics, riggers, potential problems with different boat
models/manufacturers, slip arrangements, financing, escrow process
and, hopefully, act as a buffering cool head during negotiations that, at
times, can become stressful. Brokers speak the language and generally
communicate well with other brokers and marine professionals. Take
advantage of that knowledge base.
If you are a total novice, it may be money well spent to have a surveyor
or knowledgeable marine professional accompany you and your broker
- especially if you have several boats on your list of potentials. An
experienced mariner can often help you winnow the field of potential
boats down to two or three finalists during an afternoon.
While youre out toe-rail kicking here are a few things to watch for when
checking out your list of perspective boats.
1. Engines. If you open up the engine compartment and find oily water
sloshing around the engine bed, more rust than paint on the engine and
fuel filters, clamps, belts and hoses that look like theyve been around
since before Bill and Monica hooked up...well, keep looking.
2. Sails and canvass are expensive. If theyre worn or look like a giant,
fungi covered petri dish from your 7th grade science class figure on some
severe wallet pain in the near future.
3. Water damage can get expensive fast. And remember, youre gonna want
to find out how the water got in to begin with. Leaks...Bad! Woodwork...
Expensive!
4. Running and standing rigging. Riggers charge about $100 an hour and
all the stainless hardware, fasteners, winches and wire aint cheap.
5. If the electronics look like they belonged in Frankensteins laboratory
with Igor hunched over them, then anticipate much wailing and gnashing
of teeth as your checking account balance approaches two digits.

Grabbin Bugs
Lobster Season is open

Lobster season is open and anglers armed with hoop nets or divers
using their bare (gloved perhaps) hands will be taking to the crevices,
underwater rocks and caves of Santa Monica Bay seeking out the tasty but
nimble California spiny lobster. The season runs from the present until
March 16, but now is when lobster fishermen are out in full force.
After the sun sets, certain areas of the water will be alight with green
floating glowsticks that are marking underwater traps set by boaters who
have deployed a special net (laden with mackerel or sardine bits) thats
designed to outsmart and capture the nocturnal crustacean referred to
informally as bugs.
For the lobster fishermen who opt to cast nets from the comfort of a boat,
the beginning of lobster season is a great time to spend some time on the
water with friends and family as its a change from the normal daytime
fishing trips. Theres a sense of adventure to be had cruising around in the
dark looking for a nocturnal catch. Also, this particular target is a premium
delicacy worth a small fortune at a restaurant or even the supermarket.
Local divers also get up for lobster season. While there are some divers
that spearfish, many hobbyist divers usually head over to Catalina where
the water is clear and simply check out whats going on below the surface.
But the prospect of staying local and actually catching dinner with their
own hands gets a good amount of divers off the couch and onto the ocean
floor scouring for the agile spiny lobster.
Once submerged, it can be a lonely spooky sort of world in this search
for these hiding critters. For those new to the sport Divemaster Craig
Edelman offers this advice:
When attempting to grab them in their holes, be aware that they
[sometimes] share their caves with the California morey eel. Lobsters
come out at night to start foraging for food. They defend themselves with
the use of their spiny protective shells and their lightning-fast reflexes that
enable them to swim away backwards - until they find solace in another
hole.
Edelman also reminds lobster fishermen to shoot for the middle range
when it comes to size:
14

Remember, if it looks small - it is, Edelman said. Therefore let it go.

Objects underwater, when viewing with your mask on, look 25% bigger
and 25% closer - and you cannot bring a lobster to the surface and then
measure it.
And, let the big ones go, he continued. The bull bugs and when I
say big I mean the ones that grab onto your arm and start dragging you
back into their hole let the daddies go because they help contribute to
the millions of tiny lobsters every season which will grow big enough for
you to take in about three to four years.
While the California Department of Fish and Game has declared that the
fishery is currently sustainable, there is an ongoing fishery management
plan underway. According to the agency, feedback from the fishermen
is crucial and essential for them to understand and manage the lobsters
future sustainability, which is why there are new changes in requirements.
As always there is a limit of seven lobsters per person and everyone diving
or fishing for lobsters must have a valid California fishing license, a spiny
lobster report card and a measuring gauge to ensure legal size (minimum
of three and one-fourth inches measured in a straight line on the mid-line
of the back}. In addition, however, there are new obligations. According
to the Department:
Lobster report card data is very important for CDFWs marine biologists
to manage Californias lobster fishery. More than 19,000 report cards were
received by the April 30 deadline last year. Pursuant to the California
Code of Regulations, a $20 non-return fee will be levied for unreturned
report cards or those that are returned after the deadline.
There is currently a strong El Nio event occurring in the eastern Pacific,
with above-average water temperatures expected to continue into the
months ahead in Southern California.
Lobster catches have historically been considerable during El Nio
events, so its looking to be a plentiful season, said Travis Buck, a
marine environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish
and Wildlife (CDFW).

RIGHT!

Happy Holidays from the Team at Dirty Yachts!

Its time to say so-long to one of the most

active seasons on record. Although it
appears the tuna have gone south for the
season following warmer waters, anglers
are still catching plenty of yellowtail
around the bay and the bottom fishing
continues to fill bags with sheepshead
and some small bite for white seabass.
Theres still rockfish around at the
time of this writing the half-day boats
had counts in the hundreds with some
lingcod and red snapper showing up
too. In fact one day there were 11
fishermen on the Spirfire and they reeled
in 85 red snapper, 15 rockfish and 2
lingcod not bad for late November.

6. Decks spongy? Run! Or work out a major discount. The skys the limit
on this sort of repair.
7. Blisters? Bigger than a quarter? Deeper than 3 stacked pennies? More
than a few? Uh-oooh!
8. Keel bolts that are now mounds of rust could get pricey.
9. Head smells and rotten plumbing. A smelly boat is not a happy boat. But
the smells may prevent your wife from boating with you, so that could be
a plus...depending.
10. Undersized hardware, winches, stanchions, lifelines and cleats. This is
a hallmark of a cheap builder. Think twice.
Now that you have culled out all the boats with undesirable traits and
those requiring expensive repairs, its time to select the boat youd like to
make an offer on. The trick here is not to offer too much or too little. You
dont want to pay too much, but nor do you want to anger the seller and
have him walk away. Your offer should be backed up with a good-sized
chunk of earnest money. This is where a savvy broker, with a good
working relationship with other brokers, becomes invaluable.
Assuming a successful negotiation, the next step will be a proper survey.
Again, if you dont have a preference regarding a surveyor your broker
will have at least two or three that he/she can present to you as choices.
These days, most surveyors have some type of accreditation; though none

is legally required. Your lender or insurance company may require some

sort of seal of approval from an organization such as, The National
Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) and the Society of Accredited
Marine Surveyors (SAMS). Select one and ask to see a couple of the
surveyors recent reports.
Generally speaking, a checklist type of survey is substandard. You want
as many pertinent details and investigations as required. And so will your
insurance company and bank, if youre financing the purchase.
Generally, after the survey, there will be another round of final
negotiations based upon the findings of your surveyor. After a strategy
meeting with you, the broker will contact the seller or his agent and
commence (more) final negotiations. Dont overplay your hand here if
you really want the boat. Sellers and buyers often get either angry or have
second thoughts at this delicate juncture. But, if everyone is polite, fair
and honest, it usually has a happy ending...usually.
The last hurdle to your boat buying experience is a sea-trial. This allows
the buyer to actually experience how the boat sails and an opportunity to
check the various systems while underway - sorta like test-driving a car
before you buy. The broker, and sometimes a surveyor, will usually go
along.
After any final re-negotiations and you plan on documenting your vessel,
the broker will refer you to a vessel documentation and title service
company to handle the details for title and federal documentation.

Suit up! its Berger time!

As 2015 darkens and the dawn of a new year sheds light, there will be custom diets formulated, anti-smoking patches purchased, unused gym memberships
renewed and for local yacht-racers, January 2016 brings a clean slate to begin another season of high level (mid level at least!) competition out on the
liquid race track. And for everyone serious about racing in Southern California, its the first edition of Del Rey Yacht Clubs Berger/Stein Series on
January 5th that kicks off the season and gets the adrenaline and motivation flowing once more.
On that Saturday, in the late morning, a portion of the Santa Monica Bay will be crowded with over one hundred boats checking their watches, making
last minute adjustments and plotting their strategy. In the cruiser division (Stein), sailors will be eyeing the conditions of the course, a 12-mile triangle in
the bay, while the racing division (Berger) will be thinking more long range. Their mission is to sail up to Malibu and back, a 44-mile course. Through
the years, because of the season were in, this contest has seen raging winds shrieking through the rig, down to nothing at all.
For many crews the morning of the Berger/Stein will be a time for old rivals/friends to once again meet or maybe talk a little friendly smack from boat
to boat.
This first race has been known to attract some of the hottest boats in Southern California so theres sure to be some serious competition. Some of the
best crews on the scene should be in attendance, ready to compete, but more importantly the Berger/Stein says to the racing community its time to
get back and get racing for another season.

Tip of the Month!

Handy nuggets of pocket sized
information to make your
travels easier, safer or just a
bit more enlightened

LIGHTNING PROTECTION
A lightning protection system aboard a boat
should have a dual purpose:
1. It should primarily serve as a lightning
prevention system, the purpose of which
should be to continuously shed any charge
built up by the boat, thereby rendering the
boat invisible to lightning.
2. It should secondarily be asked to serve as
a lightning strike protection system, to safely
conduct a direct strike to ground.
It should consist of a robust primary path,
which should be designed to safely conduct
a direct strike to ground. Then, a series of
secondary paths should be designed to
safely dissipate the accumulation of charge
by the boat, which should feed into the
primary path. This primary path, should
consist of three components:

EV ERY TH I N G

E L E C T RO N I C
FO R YO U R B OAT
Since 1966

1) An air terminal connected to

2) a robust conductor leading vertically in a
straight path to
3) a ground plate immersed in the water.
The top-most end, or air terminal, should
be a sharply pointed spike. As for the so
called robust conductor of the system,
which takes the path from the top-most end
of the system to the water, it must be as
direct as possible and use long radii, rather
than sharp bends along the primary path to
the grounding plate. The connections must
offer low electrical resistance or the energy
of a strike may instantly heat and melt the
connection.
Tinned wire is recommended, as usual.
