Ellis Island
We are choosing to write about Ellis Island. We chose this topic because two of use had it
in common and we feel like we can really expand off such a large topic like Ellis Island. The
thing that got us talking about the immigration is the fact that our last names were changed when
out relatives came to the US, and most immigrants came in through Ellis Island. Ellis Island was
a large part of almost all US migrants story. We will be able to expand off onto many different
tangent from this main topic in our project.
We plan on using a PowerPoint to present our project. We feel that this will be the
best way to convey our information because we can include text, images and graphs. We also had
the idea to include some audio clips on the pronunciation of our original last names compared to
how they sound with our last names now after arriving in the US. We will be able to include
graphs and statics on immigration through Ellis Island. We can also include statistics on how
many last names were changed, and how they were changed. Your last name is a part of your
identity, so we can write about how having your last name changed affected immigrants life. For
example many peoples last names reflected their trades in their homelands so when they got to
the US they lost that traditional last name and they probably also were not able to get the same
skilled jobs they held back home.

Ellis Island was an incredibly important topic for every family in the United States.
Nearly everyone here today had family that at some point came through Ellis Island in order to
become citizens of the United States. Ellis Island affected everyone since its beginning because
theyve changed names, causing people to not be able to track their family heritage past Ellis
Island.
For this project, Greg is going to do the research on Ellis Island statistics and put that
information into the PowerPoint presentation. Nick is going to do the oral presentation aspect of
the project in class. Joey is going to gather the rest of the information for the PowerPoint slides
and gather the images for the PowerPoint, in addition to some audio files related to the groups
heritage.
This upcoming week, the group is going to begin the research for the project, which
includes statistical information and other information related to the project. The next week we
will begin on putting together the information into the PowerPoint. Once all of the information
is put into the PowerPoint, the images and design of the presentation will be completed.
