Lesson Content
**This lesson is for third and fourth grade students. My students are at low math
levels.
1. 3.OA..3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in
situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by
using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent
the problem.
2. 3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms
based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction.
3. 4.OA.2 - Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative
comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from
additive comparison.
4. 4.NBT.4 - fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard
algorithm.

Objectives- What are you

teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors
in tense or tense contradiction
(i.e., I will see her yesterday.)."
Note: Degree of mastery does
not need to be a percentage.)

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to multiply or divide to solve word
problems involving multiplicative comparison and fluently add and subtract multi-digit
whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?

Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)
Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
What Higher Order
Thinking (H.O.T.) questions
will you ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you

The students will write down their answers on the Fun in the Sun Recording Sheet. I will
then be able to grade their performance using the answer key.
The evidence I collect from this data will help me determine what the students still need
help with whether its word problems or multiplication, division, subtraction and/or
addition.

Students)?
3. I will then fan the cards out on the table then I will then
explain how to play the game.
4. I will let each of you pick a card, but one of you choose first.
We will then work out the problem together. Then the other
student will be allowed to pick a card that we can work on
together.
5. I will then explain to them the different steps into figuring out
the equation:
Step 1: Read the problem.
Step 2: Reread the problems and circle the numbers.
Step 3: Reread and underline the question.
Step 4: What is the question asking you to do?

Step 5: Write the equation.

6. Based on how well they are doing, I will then ask them if they
are ready to do some on their own.
7. If they answer yes: I will let them each pick a card and work
on it on their own. If they answer no: then I will continue
working with them on it.
8. When they begin working on their own, I will observe the
students to make sure they are doing it correctly. If they get
the answer wrong, I will ask them to rework the problem by
themselves one more time using the steps. If they still cannot
get the answer, then I will take them through the problem.
9. When they are finished with the cards, I will have them turn in
their work to me so I can check their work to see where they
were messing up and where they were excelling.
This lesson is a reteach so the other students in the class will be
working on fractions with Mrs. Teacher.
These students need help with subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division, while
also working with word problems. These students have focus problems in the classroom;
however, I have observed that they like to play the math games on the computer, but
they normally dont get to because they are usually catching up on the math lesson. I
hope this educational game will allow them to have fun, focus, and be able to understand
how to dissect word problems.
By sitting there and working with the students away from the rest of the class, they are
more likely to focus and get the attention they need. By making it a game, I will be able
to engage the students in a fun way.

None at the moment.
