Grade Level: 3rd

Subject/Topic: Social Studies/Government

Rationale: The students will learn how services are financed at the local, state, and national levels of government by going
over a power point and creating a foldable to glue into their journals.

Objectives:

TSW learn how services are financed at the local, state, and national level by reviewing a power
point and creating a foldable.

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):

1. I will get the students attention by making the comment, Kids are so expensive! I will then
follow up my comment by asking the question, How do your parents get money to pay for everything
you kids need? After I allow students to answer I will tie my question into my objective by
explaining that we will be learning about how services are financed at the different levels of
government.
Process:

Information Giving: To begin my lesson, I will start by stating my objective. I will give the
students the information they need about how services are financed at the local, state,
and national level by showing and explaining my power point.
Modeling: For modeling, I will show students how to make and label their foldable to list
how services are financed at the different levels of government. After the foldable is
completed, I will model for students how and where to glue it into their journals.

Check for Understanding: To check for understanding, I will ask students to show me a
thumbs-up after each step is completed of their foldable. Also, I will ask students if they
have any questions about how services are financed at each level before having them begin
their independent activity.
Guided Practice: For guided practice, students will participate throughout my power point
presentation and follow along with my modeling of a foldable.
Independent Practice: For independent practice, students will get their privacy folders
and complete the quiz on government services and how they are financed. I will inform
students that this is an open book and open note quiz. Once the students have completed
the quiz they will turn it into the social studies turn in tray.
Closure: After everyone has completed their quizzes I will call the class to the back
carpet and ask the students what we learned today. I will have the students turn and talk
to a partner, stating what we learned today in a complete sentence, I will then have a few
students share their sentences out loud to the group.
Enrichment/Extension:

As an enrichment activity, for students that finish before others, I will have the students
get a piece of paper and write at least three complete sentences explaining what would happen if there were not finances
for our government services.

Accommodations:
1.
2.

For a child with dyslexia I will modify my lesson by reading the quiz questions out loud.
For a student that is an ELL I have modified my lesson by having visual aids throughout the lesson, such as, the
power point and foldable.

Assessment/Evaluation (Students):

I will assess the students understanding of how services are financed at

the different levels of government by grading their independent quiz sheets,

Assessment/Evaluation (Self):

I will complete this portion of the lesson plan after I have completed the lesson.
