5.1Beamsandcolumns
5.1.1Beams
Abeamisastructuralelementthatiscapableofwithstandingloadprimarilyby
resistingbending.Thebendingforceinducedintothematerialofthebeamasa
resultoftheexternalloads,ownweight,spanandexternalreactionstothese
loadsiscalledabendingmoment.Beamsarecharacterizedbytheirprofile(shape
ofcrosssection),theirlength,andtheirmaterial.
Reinforcedconcrete(RC)
Aconcretebeamdesignedtoacttogetherwithlongitudinalandwebreinforcementinresistingappliedforces.
Castinplaceconcretebeamsarealmostalwaysformedandplacedalongwiththeslabtheysupport.Becausea
portionoftheslabactsasanintegralpartofthebeam,thedepthofthebeamismeasuredtothetopofthe
slab.

Thestrengthofaconnectiondependsonthesizesofthemembersandtheconnectingtees,angles,orplates,
aswellastheconfigurationofboltsorweldsused.TheAISCdefinesthreetypesofsteelframingthat
