Multi-Camera Production Roles

You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.
For more information on what each role entails, visit
http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/collegeofproduction/collections/job_profiles
And search through the video profiles on the site.
TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job Reference your research
An interviewer is the person hosting the chat show. The interviewer usually has a guest or
interviewee who they ask questions too. Interviewers do this to build a bond so the interviewee
revels things that arent supposed to be told. However the interviewers must be careful when trying
to find out this information they could offend the interviewee and they may feel uncomfortable and
not reveal anything.
Questions are based on the topic that the interviewee knows well or there being asked about
something that may have happened to them. This is so that the interviewer finds out all the details
so they can broadcast to their viewers at home so they too also know the details or even secrets
that the interviewer has just got the interviewee to tell.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
Interviewers work on the studio floor at all times in front of the cameras and microphones because
they need to be recorded as they ask their interviewee the questions that need to broadcast on TVs.
Or otherwise they wont be doing their job, as they cant work in the control room changing cameras
if they need to be in front of the cameras with their guest or interviewee asking them questions to
revel things.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
I believe interviewers need good communicate and people skills because they have to create a
bond and gain trust with their interviewee to find out secrets or for them to tell the interviewer whats
happened in detail.
Another skill an interviewer needs to do their job well is confidence because without this confidence
they wont speak up and ask those awkward questions that need to be asked so the interviewee
revels something. I also believe interviewers needs confidence so the interviewee trusts them so
they can build a bond.

Director
Describe their job - Reference your research
A director is the person in charge. They direct the show and how it should run, everyone reports to
the director. The director is usually in charge of when each person comes out in front of the camera
and what they should do in front of the camera. They must finalise everything to perfection, before,
during and after production.

Production Booklet

The director is in charge of who goes in front of the camera, they must cast for people to come on
who will be right to go on the show or film. A director must be able to take control of a situation if
something happens to keep everything in order so nothing goes wrong.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
You will find the director in the control room telling the person who is on the vision mixer which
cameras to change to as they watch all the cameras on the screen. The director does this because
he/ she is in charge of what camera looks best to be shown on TV.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
As a director the skills they need to do their job well is to be able to take control, think outside the
box as well as being confident in the decisions they make for their team. All these skills will help the
director be a good at their role because they must take charge if something goes wrong, they need
the confidence in themselves just incase something goes wrong the must think outside the box to fix
the situation the confidence helps boost their idea for it to work. This allows the directors team to be
able to trust him/ her that he will fix the situation. A director also needs good people skills so his/ her
team likes them, so its easy for them to work together.

Camera Person
Describe their job - Reference your research
A camera person is someone who controls the cameras that are recording. These people set up the
cameras in the right angle and making sure the person they are recording fits in the frame the whole
time of the recording. It is very crucial that the camera person does not chop the top of their head
off or bits of the scene as this is what tells the story or shows the person speaking. Cutting the top
of their head of makes the recording look unprofessional so the camera person needs to be very
precise when doing his/ her job.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
You will find the camera person on the studio floor. This is because the cameras are set up on the
studio floor facing towards the set up scene that they must be recording.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
The camera persons main skill they need to do their job well is being able to use a camera. So
camera skills is the main skill because without these they wont be very good at their job, because
being a camera person is more than just pointing a camera at someone and recording. They must
know all their angles and shots to set up each camera well as well as rule of thirds to make sure
everything is in line. These are all key skills they need to have to make sure they do their job right.

Sound Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
A sound mixer is someone who controls the sound of the product. They control when each person
is heard. For example if someone is in front of the camera and theyre going to someone on location
the sound mixer must change the sound so you cant hear anyone on the studio floor but just the
recording of the person on location.

Production Booklet

It is very crucial that the sound mixer keeps the volume exactly the same throughout the recording
as this makes it look more professional than having everyone at different volumes.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The sound mixer works in the control room with all the equipment as they are watching the show
from a TV inside the control room so they know when to change the sound over or adjust the sound
to make it better.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
The skills a sound mixer needs to do their job is to know how to use the machine and use the levels
correctly. A sound mixer needs to know how to use the machine because without knowing how to
use the machine he wont be able to do his job properly as he wont know about the different levels
to use or how to work it. With the knowledge of knowing the levels properly gives the production a
better sound quality throughout.

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The vision mixer is in charge of switching the cameras. This person is in charge of when to switch
camera to camera to change the position or the angle to keep the viewers interested.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
You will find the vision mixer in the control room with all the equipment as it is linked to sound
mixing and the sound mixing machine is kept in the control room with the equipment. They belong
in the control room because the vision mixer has to look at the screens to know which camera to
switch it to as they need to listen to it very well
What skills do they need to do their job well?
The skills a vision mixer needs to do their job well is to be able to use the equipment otherwise they
wont know how to do their job. Because without knowing how to use the vision mixer desk, they
wont be able to switch cameras over. Another skill a vision mixer needs is good timing to know
when its best to switch the cameras so he doesnt miss facial expressions

Graphics Generator
Describe their job - Reference your research
A graphics generator is someone who creates the graphics in the production. They create the logos,
the main title and the credits to the product. The graphics generator also has to add the images and
videos used in throughout the interview for example if the interviewer was talking about a dress that
the Kardashian wore to an event, the graphics generator would have to get this image up ready to
show as the interviewer spoke about it to the interviewee.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The graphics generator works in the control room with all the equipment so they can see when and
where they need to place the image or logos on the screen.

Production Booklet

What skills do they need to do their job well?

A graphics generator main skill they need to do their job well is to be creative so they can create the
different logos as well as making unique titles for the interview/ show. They also need to be able to
use the computing equipment to make the graphics for the production or otherwise the graphics will
not be very good which will make the production look unprofessional

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research
The person who works on the lighting desk is known as the lighting person. They are in control of
lights, this includes the position of the lights set up on the people on stage and how bright or dark
they must be. Including if they need to add a filter of the light these filters are usually either red or
yellow to give effect. Its important the lights are positioned correctly because incorrect lighting may
cause unwanted shadowing over the interviewers or interviewees face or half the set up scene for
the interview may be lit up and the other side too dark.
Their job is important because it allows the cameras to pick up the people they are recording
without them being too dark that we cant make out facial expressions, or too bright that there is a
glow coming from them. The lighting person must be very careful when trying to find a natural
lighting just in case any of those things happen.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The lighting person works in the control room where all the other equipment is kept as they need to
look at the screens to make sure the lighting is correct. If there is any problems with lighting the
lighting person will be able to see by looking at the camera screens from inside the control room
where the can then adjust the lighting.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
The main skill the lighting person needs is to do their job well is to be able to use the lighting desk
because without this skill they wont be able to adjust the lighting correctly

Floor Manager
Describe their job - Reference your research
A floor manager is in charge of the equipment, props and sets. They must make sure it is safe
enough to be used during the interview as well as making sure everything is set up correctly. Floor
manager must also keep guests happy as well as the other staff working.
Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The floor manager works in the control room as well as the studio floor helping each section
What skills do they need to do their job well?
Floor managers needs good communication skills to due them having to help each different roles
needs. Which means they need to be friendly and confident towards the people they are working
with as well as the decisions they need to make.
