the good of the collective

To cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems

The centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals

THE AFRICAN UNION (AU)


2008, 53 African nations
Goals:
Improving and securing democracy
Human rights
Stable economy in Africa

Achieving goals by resolving African conflicts and creating a common market among

African countries

THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO)

Group of nation-states that work together to resolve trade issues


WTO promotes free trade between nations
Promotes the equal treatment of foreign and national companies in terms of trade
Reduction in government involvement in commerce (tariffs, concessions, regulations)

Some feel that the WTO ignores environmental and labour issues and values the interests

of the free markets over ordinary people


Some feel the WTO allows rich and powerful countries to control less powerful countries

INTERNATIONAL LAWS AND TREATIES

NATO
A multinational military treaty
Founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law
Promote stability (collective defense and preservation of peace and security) and well-being in the

North Atlantic area

A supranational agency with a general security force designed broadly to protect the global

interests of member nations

CANADIAN FOREIGN POLICY

Canada has long understood that multilateral cooperation is essential if the world is to

make progress in preventing and ending conflict, promoting sustainable development and
enabling commerce

PEACEKEEPING VERSUS PEACEMAKING

Peacekeeping: Armed forces in another country to separate fighting nations until a


resolution can be reached i.e. Rwandan Genocide.
Peacemaking: Actively fighting to establish a peaceful nation
Canada in Afghanistan
at the request of the democratically elected government, along with 36 other nations, and as part

of a UN-sanctioned mission to help build a stable, democratic, and self-sufficient society


Canadian Forces led by the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) = improve the

security situation and assist in rebuilding the country

Cooperation to improve quality of life


Combat issues such as poverty, human rights violations, famine, AIDS, and other health concerns

The Department of Finance Canada: moratorium on debt payments to focus on rebuilding in affected countries
The Department of National Defense (DND): sent a group to provide clean water, medical assistance, and

transportation throughout the area


The Public Health Agency of Canada: National Emergency Stockpile System (NESS) shipped to Malaysia (water

containers, blankets, medicine)


The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP): assisted in identifying the deceased.
Government of Canada: matched dollar amount of money raised by Canadians to give to NGOs (Non-

governmental organizations) for a total of $213 million
