We are all part of community. We tend to react based on our surroundings in terms of vocabulary,
communication, goals or morals, and values. This is especially true when we talk about discourse
communities. A discourse community is, typically, a community in which active members communicate
through specific vocabulary, communication mediums, meet occasionally at specified areas or locations
as well as specific morals and values. Since every aspect of this type of community may or may not
dramatically specify, in terms of membership, values, vocabulary, goals, and communication. It is very
common for ones personality to have minor to major differences. I myself belong to several
communities. These include my family, education, hobbies aka: robotics, and finally friends or
acquaintances.

I, also, am included in this idea. I am affected by my surroundings such as with

my scholarly studies in mechanical engineering. Most people would say that its difficult to
survive in engineering, however not impossible. As a matter a fact, getting into the program is
quite easy. One only needs to meet the basic college entrance requirements. It takes a
considerable amount of discipline to understands, memorize, and apply scientific and
mathematical formulas, theories, and methods. This tone of responsibility and fast pace learning
is similar to most work environments. With the constant use of proper vocabulary such as cad
files, constraints, materials, actuators which emits a tone similar to that of a modern day
business. Along with this, communication is also stretched through documents, PDFs, essays and

technical drawings. This adjusts students to environments where sudden change is expected and
can be better prepared to tackle problems with minute difficulties.
Going into ones family might not seem like a community, however this does fall into the
topic of discourse communities. As most have communities there is member ship which, for
families, is either being born and marrying in to or becoming close enough to be consider a
family member. The language is mostly nonchalant such as how are you doing, where are you
going to be, and nicknames such as bro or dad. Normally the goals is stay or become close to
each other celebrating special occasions and the values are caring for one another, and helping
one another in times of need. Similar to most families we communicate through calls, talking to
each other, texting and some social media.
Friends can especially relate to a community where individuals know each other, though
this community is probably the most relaxed of all. When communicating, all types of interaction
are open from social media, texting, calls, oral communication, video calls, or even emails.
While, types of vocabulary can be questionable at times, it varies in ranged from vague saying
like whats up or you down, to inside jokes or sometimes a vulgar word or two almost all are
welcome it is all up to ones preference. The goals are very simple to mostly have a good time,
enjoying group pastimes, engaging in conversations, or sometimes a random adventure, however
to gain access one needs have a common interest, point of view, or even a chance to get to one
another, along with ones approval.
Finally in a community with a common interest such as robotics one can feel at peace and
stress at the same time. With goals to explore, compete at high-level, and gain knowledge of
robotics and the use of robotics systems. The typical vocabulary is very similar to that of an
engineer by using words such as actuator, gearbox, pneumatics, design, motor and chassis. This

along with the communication use of calls, texts, oral communication, and documents is very
professional yet relaxed due to its a hobby like nature where one chooses to join based off of
interests.
Although we all may belong to certain communities, ones experience is all dependent on
the tone presented in each community. This tone is setup by the vocabulary, communication
methods, entrance requirements, goals and values. Although this is true I believe that the choice
of how to react also has a strong affect. By understanding this one can mold their life aspects to
create a less stressful and more memorable.
