Section Four: Differentiating Instruction through Technology

Introduction
Technology is not only just a tool of today, but it is certainly the future. As for teachers, it
is a constant learning process. Teachers should feel comfortable using different technology tools
and be able to show the students how to use them. PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and a video
camera is technology that I think third grade is very capable of comprehending.
Technology to Differentiate Instruction
PowerPoint: First, PowerPoint is an awesome program. It is simple, easy and the third grade
level should be able to grasp it quickly. I would use this technology tool in many different
assignments. A student can make a slide show of practically anything. This tool is great for
outlining, graphing, drawing, and so much more. This technology tool will have a big impact on
a third grade level. This will teach the student how to prepare and put material in order. After
learning this, the student will feel at ease with program because it is so easy to use.
ISTE Standards PowerPoint is a great teaching tool that a lot of teachers use and the students
can benefit greatly from this tool. Students must be taught in different ways so they will be
comfortable and set higher goals for themselves. Customize and personalize learning activities
to address students diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools
and resources. (ISTE) By customizing and personalizing assignments by what the students are
capable of, the teaching will be easy. A teacher must mix it up so that the students will battle to
get on top again.

Microsoft Word: Microsoft Word is one of the best word document tools around. Students can
do so much with this tool. It is used to write essays, banners, flyers, calendars, brochures, and
etc. Students can take notes with it and it is continuously saving so that the information is not
lost. Once a student is comfortable with this tool, they can do anything they set their mind to
with it. It is a flexible tool that can do anything. It can greatly impact a students life.

ISTE Standards Microsoft Word hits every standard. Students can do anything with it.
Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to
promote student learning and creativity. (ISTE) Microsoft Word is constantly giving the
students ideas which is helping them be more creative and teaching them at the same time.
Video : A video is a great technology tool when it is used correctly. The third is a great time to
begin using a video properly and learning about them. Video have come such a long way over
the years and now, it is amazing what can be done with them. Students can do skits or even get
more creative. When making a video the possibilities are endless and it is up to the student of
how creative they want to get.
ISTE Standards Videos are great tools of learning. It is different for the student and it will get
their creativity side rocking. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social
interactions related to the use of technology and information. (ISTE) Making videos can be a
great learning experience for students and it really allows them to become comfortable.
Pros and Cons
There are many pros and cons to differentiate instruction. Some pros are pretty obvious.
It provides teachers with a higher level of flexibility and helps everybody stay on the same pace.
Once the student is engaged in the activities, it helps them learn and understand easier. The cons

of differentiate instruction is that it makes the teachers work a whole lot longer. Differentiate
instruction can be difficult for some teachers because of the extra time that is added on. It creates
a lot more stress on the teachers. Also, the pace of some students may hold the class back. If it is
a bigger class, than the effectiveness of the teacher is really hard to figure out. Some students
may leap three to four levels while others go up half of a level.
Concluding Paragraph
Finally, technology is the future and everybody must learn to adapt and upgrade to them. If
not, then sadly, they will be lost. Teachers especially, have to learn to update themselves with
different levels of technology so that they can further instill greater learning and creativity in the
minds of students. PowerPoint, videos, and Microsoft Word are only the beginning. The tool is
only as good as the teacher can teach it and use it.
