Spare Parts - Reading Response Journal

Reading Response Journals (RRJs) are an informal space for you to explore the readings as well as your own reading
process. The first step to writing an RRJ is to read carefully, taking notes on the text as you go. RRJs should include the
following:
1.

A brief summary of the chapters (5-8 sentences) including major events, characters, and important information
about setting (place and time).

2004 national ROV competition, this was the main event the underwater portion of the explorer class competition. There
were 11 teams in the explorer division, and all of them had chosen to measure themselves against a higher standard. As
result, most of the team was more confident and accomplished, and all of them posted at least low points. But MIT get a
highest point during competition. Lorenzo started pray for get high scores, Cristian, Oscar and Lorenzo monitored Stinkys
descent on their video screens. So far, Stinky was holding up, and joysticks were functioning and the robot responded to
all their commands. Oscar pushed forward and Stinky motored toward the structure. Cristian pulled back, and Stinky
moved toward the surface. After that, they were focused on the mission, both Oscar and Cristian relaxed and made almost
imperceptibly small movements with their joysticks. Their mission score place them in third place behind MIT and Cape
Fear Community College. After the awards ceremony took place over dinner, and the Carl Hayden team was glad for that
Their nerves had calmed. Fredi and Allan tried to temper their expectations that they had done great during the
engineering review, but in reality, theyd be lucky to get fourth or fifth overall. Nobody had expected them to get any award.
The 2004 Marine Advanced Technology and Education Explorer class ROV championship was not going to a big league
university, or a team of seasoned competition. It was going to four high school students who had simply hoped not to finish
last.

2.

Your response to the reading (5-8 sentences) including your opinions about and reaction to the assigned
chapters. This section is a place to think deeply about the book and the emotions and complex ideas it brings up for
you.

In my opinion, they prepare the competition had a lot of problem with their robot. But they found breakthrough the problem.
Then, Lorenzo worried about the competition and he started pray for get great score, but it wasnt. I think if they do best
and focus on their work. Theyre good score during competition. After that the Carl Hayden team it was pretty amazing, I
did not know their get any award because during competition they were had no ideas. The whole team had come farther
than even they had expected. Maybe they hadnt placed at the top of the rankings, but everybody in this passage knew
that they were talented engineers. I read this chapter it was fun just to have gotten up onstage and I want to clap for
Lorenzo.

3.

2 discussion questions. These should be openended questions that could lead to an interesting conversation, not
factbased yes or no questions.

Nine month ago, why Oscar hadnt take Lorenzo seriously?

-

Oscar judged other by his own level of commitment, and Lorenzo always seemed cracked jokes and spouted
though often innovative ideas. Later, Oscar had been half prepared for Lorenzo to drop off team and never show
up again. But it was just in this moment, he realized that Lorenzo was intensely good engineering solution had
value. For the first time, he felt real respect for his teammate.

What kind of collective during competition?

4.

They collecting a sample and returning to the control shack was worth another 5. Then, theyd get additional
hundred milliliters, for a total 5 possible extra point also, they had collected a complete, though slightly diluted,
sample and would receive a 12 point. Finally, they got point more than most of the other teams. I thought about it
every little helps for their extra points.

An explanation of your reading process. How did this weeks reading go for you? Discuss specific sections that
made you confused or questions that you have about the text. Point out strategies that helped you overcome
challenges in your reading. Choose one or two of the following prompts to develop your ideas:
While I was reading,
I felt confused when so I
I was distracted by but then I
I started to think aboutbecause
The time went quickly because
I figured outby
I finally understood
I remembered that earlier in the book
I was reminded of

While I was reading chapter whole three it was interesting about 2004 ROV competition. Every team deal with their robot
contest it also impress to me. Carl Hayden didnt get high score, but they collected extra credit, it also every little helps for
their grade, it was effective their grade. I think that method was very great for their team. Also, I was wondering how to

think about that way. I started to think about if I was in these one of the character and I was ROV build robot, feel team
work, and contest. Finally I understood when I was learning about how to feel their achievement and goals. It was their
feel definitely nervous and complex emotion. The time went quickly because I feel when I was started read authority note
and introduction, but it almost be near finish the end of chapter. First section it was hardest reading process, but if you
best try to read, it will be show your grade. Like a in these book character!!

5. 3-5 significant words from this particular reading word that you feel are important to understand the text, or

You will receive complete credit on every RRJ (20 points) by thoughtfully completing the steps as described above, looking
at the rubric to check completeness, and by turning your RRJ in on time. The RRJs are a space for you to think through
the readings without having to worry too much about grammar, organization, and the other requirements of more formal
writing assignments. However, do follow basic rules such as capitalizing I and using appropriate language.
