SUBJECT: Science / TITLE: Exploring

Finite Resources
TIME: 11:20 am
CLASS: Cycle 3/ Grade 6
DURATION: ~40 minutes
SCHOOL:
Students will understand the following:

Objectives

Definition(s) of what is a resource? The two types of natural

resources? What are finite resources?
Provide examples of three finite resources and where do they
come from?
To list all the possible finite resources found in the world and
then discuss some found in Canada (to the extent of where
they can be extracted from and produced in abundance)

Competencies

Cross- Curricular

Central Idea
Inquiry Based Question
Required Materials

Time

15 minutes

Competency 1: To propose explanations for or solutions to

scientific or technological problem
Competency 2: To make the most of scientific and
technological tools, objects and procedures
Competency 3: To communicate in the languages used in
science and technology
Competency 1: To use information
Competency 4: To use creativity
Competency 5: To adopt effective work methods
Competency 8: To cooperate with others
Competency 9: To communicate appropriately
Mankinds interactions can affect Earths finite resources
The way finite resources are used?
Students
Teacher
Pencils/ markers, eraser
- Notes
Questionnaire Activity
- illustrations of diagram*
Laptops (one will be given to
- Rubric to evaluate
a pair of students)
Classroom arrangement: Teaching will be involving groups of
4-5 students at a time (centers).
Procedure
Introduction/ Engage
Teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students several
provoking questions regarding to their prior knowledge:
What does the term resources imply?
What do we know about natural resources?
What are the two types of natural resources? (Infinite and
finite, another name for them are renewable and nonrenewable resources) Ask the students to define difference
between them.
Important to accept students responses to develop an
initial interest or connection. Write down notes for them to
get the big idea.
Ask students: What is the meaning of a resource that is called
finite?
What are the three main examples of finite resources and that

are also known as fossil fuel? Wait for their responses (If they
dont know, provide examples of ways we use or produce
most forms of energy. Ex, need them to fuel our cars)
Address; where do they come from? (again, students will
sharing where they think they are found, ex. We extract these
resources from drilling oil and gas from underneath the
ground, mining reservoirs,..)
Each student sitting around the table will have a chance to
answer where do they think these resources are found?
MENTION SOME LIST OF FINITE RESOURCES FOUND
AROUND THE WORLD AND ALSO BE SURE TO STATE
THOSE FOUND IN CANDA ( part the BONUS question on
the activity)

Activity Explanation

10-15 minutes

5 minutes

Discussion
Direct the students to answer the questions by visiting the
sites and spending a few minutes reading the information.
Support those who have questions they seem to not
understand.
Students will have time to discuss and work together to hand
in one product at the end of the lesson.
Reflect
If theres time, teacher will ask students to recap on what they
learnt about finite resources

Assessment

Distribute the activity questionnaire to each pair of student

and the laptops should have the websites already set up for the
students.
Explain the instruction by asking on of students to read it out
loud for the others sitting around the table can hear.

N/A

Remind students to pay attention by listening to the person

speaking.
Praise students who are attentive listeners, so that those who
are speaking out of order will then feel the need to pay
attention and be respectful of others opinions and answers.
Remind students to raise their hands when they want to share
or answer the questions asked to them.
Provide students time to think about their answers and if
needed, ask: Do you want me to come back to you? This
way the student will have more time to think and be ready to
answer when the teacher comes back to him/ or her.
Students will be assessed on the basis of their participation in
the discussion among their peers.
They will also be graded as pair on this assignment to
accurately state the answers to the questions asked of them,
Students will be evaluated on the quality, content and
grammar of their written answer. (Rubric to follow)
