Organizational Design:

Organizational design can be explained using two interacting features - Structural dimensions
and Contingency factors. Here we would be evaluating Grofers as a organization on the some
of the aspects of Organizational design.
1) Culture:
Grofers, like other startups has flat structure. The structure is organic in nature. The
environment is very informal and open. Grofers has currently approx. 3300 employees
including deliverers, shoppers and station managers. Management is very open to new
ideas, and quick to implement them if they are good enough. Employees are empowered
and have enough flexibility to implement new ideas. The work culture here can be
summed up in one sentence: "Stand, sit, lie down - work whichever way you want, but
just make sure that you deliver." The only emphasis is on the on time delivery of work.
But, with the organization growing in size, cultural shift is visible with it turning chaotic
at times. [Citation: Employee reviews]
2) Environment
Environment includes all the factors that affect the working of the organization. In the
case of Grofers, environmental factors are Local shopkeepers, government, customers,
competitors and most importantly funders.
With the business model Grofers, it is bound to run in losses in the initial stages of
growth. Hence, in this respect, funders are the major environmental factor for Grofers.
3) Size:
Grofers started as B2B company with headcount of around 10 people. With the increase
in size as it switched to B2C model, Grofers has gone many organizational changes. The
current headcount stands at 3300+. The increased size has bought in various
organizational challenges as the entrepreneurial organic model is on growth in the
number of employees. The same will be discussed in-depth in design challenges.
