Evaluating Sources

1st source: Risks and Benefits of Social Media for Children and Adolescents
Thesis: Social Media does help teenagers in terms of communications, social connections, and
learning technical skills but there is a high chance of teenagers being exposed to many risks such
as cyber-bullying and sexting.
How the author is creating argument: Author uses many evidences such as polls, reports, and
surveys to back up his argument. Also the author states examples and influences of the risks from
using social media to show what he is arguing for and why.
Rhetorical Moves: The author explains the cause and effect of sexting. The author states that
widespread distribution of inappropriate pictures and easy access to one another in social media s
causing the sexting. As the result of sexting, teenagers could possibly result in emotional distress,
school suspension, and legal problems.
Bias or not: Many of the statements in this source seem to be not biased since many of evidences
are used to back up most of the authors claims. But in some parts, the author tends to pick only
information that supports the argument which leads it to be a bit biased.

media by giving examples of bad effects from using social media.

2nd Source: The Impact of Social Media on the Academic Development of School
Students
Thesis: Social media does not increase teenagers academic performance and therefore there is

each section covers different material. Those different sections contain introduction, literature
review, research methods, findings and discussions, conclusion, and limitations. The main

Yoon 3

argument is in the conclusion which is supported by other sections to help support his argument
and make his argument stronger.
Rhetorical Moves: The author is comparing and contrasting teenagers that spend less than one
hour on social media and those teenagers that spend more than six hours on social media to
conclude that social media does not impact school students academic performance.
Bias or Not: Many of claims were used with evidences and references to show that they are facts
not authors opinions. In addition to that, I have not read any sentences that were using either
exaggeration or misinformation.

She is achieving her goal by writing this article as a parent of two boys who are exposed
to social media as well. Since she is writing this article in such a point of view, she is
providing more deep thoughts and understanding of the topic.
