Hjelmslev's sign model is a development of Saussures sign model.

He
renamed Saussures signified and signifier content and expression,
respectively, and called these two sides as planes of the sign. Both the content
plane and the expression plane are further stratified into semiotic form and
substance, making four strata: content-form, expression- form, contentsubstance and expression- substance. Hjelmslev restricted the use of the term
sign to the strata of expression-form and content-form.
