ISTC 301 Practical Teaching Lesson Plan

Teachers Names: Alyssa, Jennifer, Rae, Rita

Date: 11/19/15

Grade Level: 2nd

Subject Area: Math

Alyssa Learning Objective(s):

Students will be able to utilize addition and subtraction concepts to solve addition and
subtraction story word problems.
Students will be able to evaluate the difference between addition and subtraction and apply
strategies to solve them.
Students will use prior knowledge to activate connections between real world scenarios and the
mathematical principles.
Jen Standards: Include Common Core and ISTE.NETS for Students
2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know
from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
1. Creativity and innovation. A. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, and
processes.
Assessments:
During Math Workshops, the students will have a chance to demonstrate understanding
throughout the Educreations activity. Students are continuously answering a problem and letting
the teachers know what types of word problems the students are having trouble comprehending.
This activity also allows the teachers to know what students need a re-teach on story word
problems. Thumbs up or thumbs down will be given as feedback for this formative assessment.
A summative assessment will be implemented as the closure of the lesson. Students will
complete an exit ticket to solve a story word problem using their best method of solving the
problem.

Teaching Materials:
ActivInspire (Promethean Board), iPads, Big Dice, EduCreations (app on iPad)
The entire class shall participate in an activity through ActivInspire.
Small Group Exercise:
Each student will have an iPad. They will use EduCreation (interactive whiteboard) to participate
in a small group exercise where they have to complete various word problems.
Students will participate in addition exercises simulated through the Big Dice.
Rita Anticipatory Set:
VIDEO-https://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/addingandsubtractingintegers/

Students will view a Brain Pop video on adding and subtracting integers. Students will be told to
pay close attention to the different strategies and vocabulary words that are given throughout the
video.
After the video, the teachers will ask the question: So what do you think our learning goal for
the day is? and a quick discussion will ensue.
This leads into the learning goal for the day: The students will utilize addition and subtraction
solving strategies in order to complete story word problems.
TRANSITION: Its time to focus your attention to the Promethean board up front for our
terrific turkey activity.
Rita Procedures:
Students will direct their attention to the Promethean board in the front of the room for the
Promethean activity. The students will be actively participating in the ActivInspire flipchart
known as Turkey Math: Gobble Up The Numbers. This will be done as a whole group so all of
the students review different strategies in order to add and subtract so once they are broken into
small groups, they will have reviewed with each other and learned some information that they
might have missed beforehand.
1. Teachers will introduce addition and subtraction in story word problems using different
problems that have to do with turkeys.
2. Students will be called upon randomly to come up to the board and complete the
problems as shown. Teachers will guide and prompt as needed. The other students in the
classroom will be a resource as well.
TRANSITION: Now it is time to have a little more practice with addition and subtraction. Look
up at the screen to see where you are supposed to go for the first rotation.
Students are split into two groups in order to have a Math Workshop where there is a task that
allows for easy practice with addition or subtraction and a task that allows for productive
struggle. Students must look at the last slide of the flipchart.
1. The Purple Ravens group (Allison, Audrey, Brad, Brian, Josie, Kristy, Jada) will go
with Jennifer and Rita to Math Workshop Activity Number 1 for the first portion of the
workshop.
2. The Orange Orioles group (Derek, Whitney, Kara, Sarah, Hannah, Carmen) will go
with Rae and Alyssa to Math Workshop Activity Number 2 for the first portion of the work.
3. After 15 minutes, the two groups will switch activities.
MATH WORKSHOP ACTIVITY NUMBER 1: Educreations by Jen and Rita
1. Students will be given an iPad and be instructed to go to the Educreations app.
Teachers will explain that this is an area for them to be able to show their work and use the
strategy Read, Draw, Solve.
2. Teachers will take turns reading different addition and subtraction story word

problems. Students will be given time to draw it out and show the equation on the app
3. There will be a 5 problems. After 3 minutes for each problem, the students will show to
the teachers as a formative assessment and be given thumbs up or thumbs down dependent upon
if the answer is right or wrong.
MATH WORKSHOP ACTIVITY NUMBER 2: Big dice with Alyssa and Rae
1. This is meant as a simple game used as addition practice. Students are put onto two
different teams. Each team gets two big dice.
2. Students roll the dice one at a time and add up the two integers. The team with the
higher sum gets a point. Students may use each other as resources, but it should be mainly
mental math.
3. The first team to get to 10 points, or the team with the highest number of points at the
end of the 15 minute rotation wins.
TRANSITION BETWEEN ROTATION: Bell will sound three times. It is now time to switch to
the next activity. Clean up the first area and move on to the second area.
Have students return to their original seats in preparation for exit ticket.

Alyssa UDL Implementation (be sure to reference the UDL Educators Checklist for this
section)
Provide specific examples of the components in this lesson plan that exemplify the following:
Multiple Means of Representation: The lesson will include technological/visual means of
representation, as the students complete the flip chart.
Multiple Means of Engagement: The students will be engaged in hands on activities with the
dice, they will also be involved in
Multiple Means of Action and Expression: The students will be able to discover their own
strategies for solving three addend equations.
Jen TPACK:
We chose to use small group activities as the main pedagogical approach in our lesson, therefore
Educreation on the iPad was the best choice since every student will be able to use their own
iPad. Students will be able to solve the math problems and write their answers on the whiteboard
in the Educreation app. They can easily share their answer and strategies with their peers without
having to get up in front of the whole class, they can just turn their iPad around and share with
the other group members.
Some students will have the ActivInspire activity on their computers so they can follow along
easier and complete the problems with the teachers. Teachers will be observing students and their
strategies. If the teacher sees a student with a good strategy, they might be asked to share it with
the class.

Jen Closure: This is the act of reviewing and clarifying the key points of the lesson. What will
you say or do (or what might your students do) to bring this lesson to an appropriate conclusion?
Students will be able to add and subtract within 20.
What are some strategies you used to solve the problems?
Exit ticket to see what the students learned.
