Approach to Writing

Over the course of the semester, I have compared my writing to my high school level of writing
and my college level of writing. In high school, I had to write for different subjects such as
history, social science classes, and science classes. I approached the writing in those classes
differently because the expectations of the content were different. I can recall from my United
States History class, my teacher asked us to provide five examples of popular sovereignty in the
United States. In this situation, my writing needed to be clear for understanding and structured
well for my essay. My examples needed to be thorough to explain and defend the reasons for my
examples. I needed to give examples from history and apply it to the required theme of popular
sovereignty. In contrast, my biology class wanted information and details but it did not need to
be this drawn out lab report. My approach to writing in this class was different from my history
class. In biology I knew that my writing needed to be sufficient information but it needed to be
precise and to the point. For that class, I needed to provide information on trends, data, graphs,
observations, etc. This shows how my writing approaches are different in different situations and
settings.
I compared my writing to my college courses. I found that my writing has become more
detailed and somewhat analytical. This semester, the writing class and sociology are the only two
classes that I do a lot of writing for. For example, sociology requires a deeper level of thinking
and it can be analytical. My writing is very detailed because I have to explain and describe my
reasoning behind my answer choices. In my writing assignments, I must make connections to
bigger ideas such as theories, ideas, and concepts.
I think that my writing process changes depending on the assignment and the guidelines.
I find it easier to write when the guidelines and requirements are outlined. My writing process
approach is different and my writing is a lot better because I am able to plan ahead. My approach
to writing is better when my prompt is defined and I will be able to write to the best of my
ability.
Also, I do believe that my writing process does change or vary depending on my
audience. Writing comes in different forms and my writing is more formal in a school setting. In
casual settings, such as a creative writing class that I took, my writing was a lot more relaxed.
My work relied more on my thoughts and ideas. I did not have to focus on structure and
formality.
Overall, approaching writing in different classes varies on the topic. When I write for an
assignment, typically a longer writing assignment, I like to make a plan and outline my work so
my paper will have the necessary and proper structure and meaning. Writing and the approach to
it changes for the subject and the audience.
