K-1-5: Demonstrate knowledge of complications associated with

pregnancy such as: abortion, abruptio placenta, eclampsia, ectopic
pregnancy, effects of substance abuse, gestational diabetes
mellitus, hyperemesis gravidarium, inuterine growth retardation,
malposition of fetus, placenta previa, transient hypertension.
It was particularly interesting to me to learn about preeclampsia. I
know a woman who experienced it, and have heard her story. After
reading about it in this course I really loved being able to relate the
information to the story and visualize her scenario. The fact that I
personally knew someone who experienced preeclampsia first hand
made it much more intriguing to me, and I was eager to further my
knowledge of the condition by seeking out videos online to
enhance my understanding.
I learned about the pathophysiology and nursing care of the
complications associated with pregnancy listed in the competency.
It was meaningful to me because I have a lot of interest in
maternity nursing and hope to work on that type of unit at some
point in my career. Therefore, it is really important to me to feel
confident in my understanding of all the possible complications
that can occur with pregnancy.
Good I completed all the readings outlined in the course
curriculum that apply to this competency. In addition, I made
supplementary notes of my own, and found videos on the internet
to help further my knowledge of certain conditions that were either
still unclear to me after the readings, or that I was genuinely
interested in learning more about. Also, I read a few stories on the
internet of women who had suffered from some of the
complications, which I believe helped me to apply what I learned.

I hope to some day work as a maternity nurse and therefore I know

this knowledge will be helpful to me. Every client is different and
has their own unique situations and needs, and I have no doubt I
would encounter many of the complications listed above as a nurse
on a maternity unit. Having a solid understanding of the underlying
pathophysiology will help guide my nursing care and build my
confidence to work with patients in these situations.
