Davids Discourse Community
Now a days people really need be able to write, perhaps many have lost that skill due to
the improper texting and abbreviation, my self-included. However writing is a very important
factor that we must have. Students would always need it to survive college, and through life as
well. Writing is the only way we can communicate, other than speaking it or with sign language,
but writing has become a more important factor now in this days. Students need to know how to
write if we want to earn a better grade in school, we also need to know how to write essays if we
want to attend a superior university. Unfortunately many people now think that because the
world is evolving into a more technological world we wont need writing skills as much,
however this people are wrong. Even the new technological world needs people that have
writing skills. To be able to write a computer software, or code, one must be able to have good
grammar because the code must be spelled correctly. We need more writing skills.
In my professional discourse community, I have to be very professional. In the work
environment I need to show professional respect to the clients, and to my company leaders.
Lacking this kind of respect can result of bad reviews for the company, and perhaps the result of
getting fired. As a consultant at Best-Buy, I interact with a large variety of people, and
personalities. As the case may be, one client may not like how I may perform around him or her,
perhaps acting to friendly or too unfriendly. I recall once that I was trying to be friendly with

one of the customer, and the customers reply was, I am here to buy a laptop, not to make a
friend. I was very wistful because all one wanted to do was be polite, but I just needed to be
respectful. As a result one just behaves professional, and gives the respect that the client and the
employees deserve. The genre here is very professional, e-mail has to be address properly to my
leaders, and the employees communicate using walkie talkies most of the time.
The discourse community of my school is very different than the work community, but
similar in some ways. I get to interact with my friends and colleagues, and be able to be
informal with them. Although I need to be respectful and professional wen addressing my
professors, and writing an essay or a report. I need to be polite how I address my audience, in
most cases my professor. I can even be penalize for addressing my audience improperly. A
previous professor always said not to use the word, you, when we were writing an essay, he
said that if he was reading it, than the essays message was for him since he was the audience,
and that was not the case. As a result every type of work that I do has to be professional, revised
before the person grading it receives it. The behavior at the school community has to be
professional too, maybe not as rigorous, however respect must be giving at all times.
Now the more relaxing discourse communities, family, friends, and church. This
communities also deserve the respect from me, but it is not ask for as much, or as demanding as
school, and work. I do need to give respect to my elders in my family, my parents, uncles, but it
is more relaxing. I get to interact with them more freely. For example, in Spanish there is two
words for, you, one is for respect and the other one is for the people that you have a lot of
confidence. You address the person, usted, in Spanish as a sign of respect, and, tu, for a
more informal way. All my family relatives I address them as, tu, I dont do it because I
disrespect them, but because I know them well enough to speak to them like that. The same

thing goes for my friends. I think that they are the group that receive the least respect of all the
communities, because all I do with friends is have fun. Of course they are times that I approach
them with respect, but it is very rare. At church I really need to be respectful to the place I am
in, and mostly because God is in there. Of course to the people there I need to be respectful too,
but I think of them as part of my family as well, which means I can speak to them as, tu,
because I know them well enough to do so. This three are the least that I need to worry about
how I approach people. The topics that are mostly speak of are of God, precisely because my
family is Christian, and most of my friends as well. And this topics are able to be spread around
us by using social media, e-mail, text, and mostly phones.
It is crucial now a days for students to be able to write, and to be able to find the
difference within informal, and formal, and the writing skills that are behind it too. By being
able to understand the many different discourse communities that are out there, it is possible for
students and even employees, who rely on writing as part of their careers, to achieve something
greater than what they were achieving.
