Americas Intellect
The 21st century is a new day for America and the rest of the world. People many
times compare the intellect and other aspects of society today to the past. In America,
race and intellect is huge because we have had a huge race issue in the past to reflect on
and improve our society as a whole. Many say that technology is bad and society today is
really ignorant and dumb compared to our past. Many countries have passed America and
has advanced way and beyond where as America used to be the very top.
In the article Anti-Intellectualism and Contemporary America by Michael W
Austin can be closely compared to the article No, Self-Centeredness Is Killing America by
Ravi Chandra. Both of these articles talk about how America today is anti-intellectual but
they talk about how we are being educated and show empathy toward us. Both of the
articles say that its the way we are educated and how we are effected by current events.
Both Austin and Chandra say that we arent being taught the same values or skills that we
need in todays society where in the past generations of America were being taught above
the other nations.
Michael Austin touches topics of our education and the way we learn today.
Austin makes the point that we read more in society today but what we are reading isnt
as substantial or knowledgeable. In our society today we read tweets, magazine articles,
and illiterate material that has no benefits. Austin also talks about the reading material

that is required in school in society today. Austin talks about how the reading material
assigned to students in school today is less complex and intelligent than it used to be.
In Austins article he talks about how it isnt our fault in society today it is what
we have and how were are learning. Austin says, We need to read books that stretch and
challenge our minds. We need to read books that improve our lives We need to learn how
to follow the steps of an argument. It may not be entertaining, but ideas matter. (Austin
1). Austin is blaming the times we live in and the way we are taught, not the way we are
today that makes us ignorant compared to the past.
In conclusion, Michael Austin is not blaming the ignorance of todays society on
the generation or people that are growing up today, but the way we have been taught and
what we have to work with.
