Title of the Lesson: "Am I A Bear or A Bee or Simply Just Me"


Brief Description of the lesson : Teacher will do a whole group read aloud with students using
the book "Bear and Bee" by Sergio Ruzzier.

Relevance/Rationale:
Children at the preschool age are developing a sense of self and a sense of others. In a world
where biasses exist, children must learn to make their own fair judgments of the people they will
encounter.

Instructional Context:
This activity is designed as a whole group learning experience. Students will work together to
develop their ideas, understandings, and conclusions based on the selected text. This environment
will foster learning by providing multiple experiences/perspectives that children can work from.
Procedure:
Students will gather in the reading area. Teacher will sit in the chair and describe to students that it is story
time. Students will then be prompted by the teacher in a finger play. Upon completing the finger play, students
will assume their spots in the reading area. Teacher will go over behavioral expectations during Story Time
with the use of visual aids. *This time will be considered a transitional period*

-Criss Cross Applesauce or Pretzel Rod (if an additional option is needed, accommodations will be provided)
Read 1 (Monday):
Pre-Assessment/Introduction
Students will be introduced to the text. The teacher will state the name of the book as well as the author and
illustrator of the book. Teacher will prompt the students with an open ended question.
Open Ended Question: What do you think a bear is like? What do you think a bee is like?
Read Aloud
Teacher will read the text. Teacher will focus on events in chronological order and make references to
previous pages throughout the reading.
Post Assessment/ Reflection
Teacher will prompt the students with an open ended question.
Open Ended Question: Do you remember what the bear told the bee about bees? Do you think the bear was
right? Do you think the bee was terrible, big, had large teeth, sharp claws, and never shared his honey?
Read 2(Wednesday):
Pre-Assessment/Introduction
Students will be reintroduced to the text. The teacher will state the name of the book as well as the author and
illustrator of the book. Teacher will prompt the students with an open ended question.
Open Ended Question: Why does the bear think he is a bee? How did he feel?
Read Aloud
Teacher will read the text. Teacher will focus on character emotions.
Post Assessment/ Reflection:
Teacher will prompt the students with an open ended question.
Open Ended Question: How do you think the bee felt when the bear thought he was a monster?
Read 3(Friday):
Pre-Assessment/Introduction:
Students will be reintroduced to the text. The teacher will state the name of the book as well as the author and
illustrator of the book. Teacher will prompt the students with an open ended question.
Open Ended Question: Describe the bear and the bee. Are they nice or mean?
Read Aloud:
The teacher will have the students explain what is occurring in the text. Students will use prior knowledge of
the text to tell the story.

Method of assessing childrens growth and learning :
The teacher will take notes based on students' responses during the first read. Students will then
work on their self portraits. Students will share their self portrait with the class. Teacher will take
notes based on students' responses during the second read of the text. Teacher will compare notes
to note growth of students' understanding of topic/concepts. Students will make a portrait of a
friend. Students will share their portraits with their friend. During the third read, children will be
prompted to discuss what they have learned about judging others before getting to know them.
Teacher will take notes and note growth of students' understanding of topic/concepts based of first
and second read in addition to extension activities.
Follow-up/Extension Activities:
Students will do portrait drawings. The first type of portrait drawing they will do will be a self
portrait. The second type portrait drawing they will do is a portrait of a friend. Teacher will
predetermine the pairs.
