5.RL.2.2 Determine a theme of a story, play, or poem from details in the text, including how
characters respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize
the text.

WEB TOOL EXPLANATION AND HOW KIDS WILL USE IT:


Students will use Voki as a way to identify the different parts of a book. The students will
make the avatar resemble their rendition of the main character. Also they should clearly
determine that they understood the meaning of the story that they read, and provide a brief
summary of the text.

I chose to do my activity using Voki, because after watching the video I was really curious to see
how it worked. I thought that this might be a more interesting way for grading assignments. I
chose to use Voki for an English assignment for 5th graders to read a text and then be able to
identify the moral and provide a summary. I didnt like how limited the character options were,
because ideally I would have wanted to be able to grade students on the appearance of their
avatar based on the descriptions given by the story, I assumed that it would have been a similar

program to the SIMS. In general I think applying these tools in the class would make things more
fun for students, because they can be creative while answering basic and boring questions.
Other tools that I liked were Wiki and the classroom guru. I like when teachers have us
use wiki in class, and I think that everyone being able to work together would be a good way for
getting group projects done without having to work outside of class together. Classroom Guru
allows teachers to keep record of students activity, attendance, and behaviors. Having a single
location to track all of this information would make data tracking much easier.
