NURS 360 Health & Illness III
STUDENT ACTIVITIES ON THE UNIT
Each student will be performing supervised patient care for their assigned clients. The focus for
this semester is for the student to refine his or her physical assessment and technical skills; and
to increase his or her organizational and prioritization skills in the management of at least two
clients.
A.

Students will be able to perform the following skills independently upon the
discretion of the instructor:

A.M. care and linen changes
Feeding
Tube feeding
Checking placement and residual from GI tubes like NGT, GT, or JT
Irrigating GI tubes like NGT, GT, or JT
Small volume enemas (e.g., Fleets)
Oral care
Transfers & positioning
ROM
Monitoring and adjusting maintenance IV flow rates
(NOTE: This does not include medication drips like heparin, insulin, aminophylline,
etc.)
Turn, cough, & deep breathing
Incentive spirometry
Monitoring respiratory treatments
Pulse oximetry
Monitoring labs
Checking orders throughout the day
Documentation on forms designated by each clinical instructor

Students will be able to perform the following skills under the supervision of and
in coordination with the primary nurse:

Pre- and post-operative teaching

Assisting with admission, transfer, and discharge
Discharge teaching
Client education
Documentation on the appropriate forms for each of the activities above in this
section

The following skills must be perform under the supervision of the instructor (or
primary nurse if mutually agreed upon between the instructor and primary nurse)
1* Oral medications
2* Nebulizer treatments
3* Foley removals
4* Clean dressing changes
5* Chest tube monitoring
6* Ostomy care
7* Specimen collection (Exceptions may include midstream, clean catch urine
specimens, stool specimens, and/or sputum specimens. Please check with your
individual clinical instructor.)

8* Sterile dressing changes
9* Foley insertions
10* NGT insertions
11* Bladder irrigation
12* Suture or staple removals
IV THERAPY
13* Central venous catheter monitoring
14* Changing peripheral and central IV tubings
15* Peripheral and central IV dressing changes
16* Peripheral and central heparin lock flushes
17* Monitoring IV partial fill infusions
18* Monitoring blood product transfusion
19* Monitoring TPN and PPN infusions
20* Monitoring Intralipid infusions
21* Monitoring heparin drips
22* Monitoring insulin drips
23* Monitoring vasoactive drips
24* Monitoring PCA therapy (NOTE: The primary nurse will perform the PCA check)
25* Hanging new IV bags
26* Administering blood products
27* Administering parenteral nutrition (TPN, PPN, IL)
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION (Instructor will clarify)
28* NG, gastric, jejunostomy tubes medications
29* Peripheral and central IV partial fills
30* IV push medications that general floor RNs can perform in the agency
31* Intramuscular injections
32* Subcutaneous injections
33* Intradermal injections
RESPIRATORY TREATMENTS
34* Oral, nasal, tracheal suctioning
35* Tracheostomy care

DOCUMENTATION
36* Students will pre-chart physical assessments until told otherwise by his or her
instructor

37* Students will pre-chart DAR or SOAPE notes

38* After pre-charting is approved by the clinical instructor, the student then may
document the approved version in the clients hospital record.
