History
Founded in 1982 the Prevent Child Abuse Utah (PCAU) has been
a institution that has vowed to help prevent child abuse in all its
forms through programs, services, public awareness activities,
training and education, advocacy and networking.
Marilyn Sandberg started the agency under the name WeberMorgan Child Abuse Coordinating Council with the goal of
educating the public about child abuse. Marilyn worked as the
Chief Executive Director until 2003 and during her 17 years with
the agency many developments were made towards the education
of children, parents, and the public about the prevention of child
abuse. Marilyn went on to work for the National Center on
Shaken Baby Syndrome.
In 1986, the first Annual Child and Family Violence
Conference was held to gather professionals together to advance
the prevention of child abuse and family violence.

The name has been changed to Joining Forces:
Prevention, Investigation, Prosecution, Treatment,
the Annual Conference on Child Abuse and Family
Violence.
In 1987, the council started a charity golf tournament
to benefit the foundation. The event is named The
Stacey Campbell Memorial Golf Tournament Fore
Utah Kids.

Prevent Child Abuse Utah is making a real

difference.

Due to the rapid expansion of the Councils

programs to include not only child abuse prevention
education, but also shaken baby syndrome training
and sexual harassment prevention the agency name
was changed to Child Abuse Prevention Center of
Utah (CAPC) in 1997. However, because of the need
for more education the Shaken Baby Syndrome
separated from the Child Abuse Prevention Center in
2000. In November of 2001, the Child Abuse
Prevention Center of Utah merged with the Salt Lake
Office of Prevent Child Abuse Utah, while still
having separate names. Prevent Child Abuse Center
incorporated an annual fundraising dinner that both
institutions were apart of.
In 2003, the agency name was officially changed to
Prevent Child Abuse Utah. The agency became an
official chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America.
The PCAU, in partnership with many other state
chapters, presents our Pinwheels for Prevention
Campaign. This campaign takes place through the
month of April. The pinwheel represents the
innocence of a child and the bright future the child
deserves. This campaign is very important for Child
Abuse Prevention. It helps bring awareness to abuse
prevention and shows society that anyone can help
prevent child abuse. This campaign was started in
2010 and has been very successful since then.
PCAU continues and will continue to bring
programs and messages to all parts of Utah. The best
way to prevent child abuse is to get involved.
