I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
Metamorphosis - frog life cycle
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
Unit on animals and offspring
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
I can learn about metamorphosis in frogs.
L.OL.01.21Describe the life cycle of animals including the following stages: egg,
young, adult; egg, larva, pupa, adult
L.HE.E.1 Observable Characteristics- Plants and animals share many, but not all,
Most of them will know basic knowledge of a frogs life cycle (but not in too
much detail)

summative)

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
Start off by telling students the target of science for today: I can learn about
metamorphosis in frogs.
Students will most likely ask What is metamorphosis? Answer students that we will
be reading a bit about it.
Read the book on Life Cycles (Reading A-Z). Highlight important things, such as
metamorphosis (change that animals go through in their life cycles). Tell students
were going to look at one animal that goes through metamorphosis (frog). Show the
video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMs3waaW75g
Ask students what kind of changes the frog goes through.
Does the frog look exactly like a frog when its young (tadpole)? What
does it look more like? And then what happens?
Show the frog life cycle handout on Elmo. Work with students in
numbering the stages and point out how it goes around in the circle (going
back to why its called a life cycle)
Prompt students to tell the name of each stage (i.e. tadpole, froglet,
etc.) and what changes occur in each stage
Hand out frog worksheet where students number the stages from 1-12. Work
through the first three with the students (because the similarities could possibly
confuse the students).
Send students back to their seats to work on the worksheet.

Closure
Your reflection on the lesson including ideas for improvement for next time:
Didnt have enough time, so we just did the worksheet as a whole class (I cut it
out and we pasted it on paper)
The egg stage confused some of the students because of the tadpoles inside the
eggs vs. just dots (when the egg just formed)
Metamorphosis is a hard word for 1st graders I probably should have had a
card with the word written on it
