Title of Work: Seminar Plan (Individual Health Project) Nutrition/Health-UW-Platteville

Cheer/Stunt Team
Date Completed: Fall 2015
DESCRIBE WORK SAMPLE
The seminar plan for nutrition/health for the UW-Platteville cheer/stunt team was created to plan
out informational meetings for the semester. The team met for eight different meetings over the
semester and a topic was selected for each day. The plans were developed to help meet the
needs/goals of the athletes and improve their nutritional/health choices. Behavioral modification
and assessment methods were used throughout the semester (making proper food choices, how to
prepare meals, how to select proper foods when shopping, and journaling food choices). The
information sessions were each 60-80 minutes in length and concluded with time for questions
and answers.
ALIGNMENT REFLECTION
The individual health project seminar plan best aligns with Standard 1 Advocacy: The health
promoter understands, responds to, and interacts with the larger political, social, economic,
legal, and cultural context that affects health promotions. This work sample best aligns with this
standard because I advocated for better nutritional/health choices for the cheer/stunt team. The
knowledge of nutrition and health possessed by the athletes was very minimal. Many of the
athletes had been previously given misleading or improper advice in regards to nutrition and
health. I advocated for improving nutritional and health in many ways. The main objective was
to inform the clients on how to make better choices and ways to avoid choices that could
negatively affect their performance and health. I advocated for whole food choices rather than
packaged processed foods, avoiding excess calories from poor choices (candy, simple sugar
juices, and alcohol), consumption of lean proteins, the importance of fiber/vegetable intake, and
how to properly deal with obstacles to making wise nutritional/health choices.
Health and Physical Educations Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
This work sample best aligns with KSD2.a. CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT OF RESPECT
AND RAPPORT The candidate understands genuine care and respect for the clients, while the
client exhibits respect for the candidate. The client also displays genuine care and respect for
one another as individuals and as clients, and are aware of cultural, social, intellectual and
physical variations. This work sample best aligns with this KSD because I had the best intentions
and respect for all clients involved during our informational meetings. I worked very hard at
developing plans to help improve the clients nutritional/health habits. The clients showed respect
by applying what I taught them to their own lives and completing tasks I assigned. Over the
semester they were to journal their foods over a period of one to three days, put one day of all
foods consumed into my fitness pal, be involved in discussions, and attend meetings off campus
(grocery shopping). I showed respect by altering the information presented to better suit the
needs of the clients. The clients also showed respect by giving positive feedback after meetings

and giving examples of how they have made positive changes. The social and cultural
differences of the clients was also assessed and information presented was altered to help the
clients apply the knowledge to their own lives.
Secondary Alignments
KSD4.d. CONTRIBUTES TO THE COMMUNITY The candidate is able to assume a leadership role
among colleagues and is supportive and cooperative with peers and volunteers, and serves as a
participant and leader in the community.
KSD4.e. GROWS AND DEVELOPS PROFESSIONALLY The candidate is aware of opportunities for
professional development to improve client knowledge and pedagogical skill and can take an active role
in assisting other educators.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
What I learned about training from this experience.
I learned from this experience that content covered needs to be relevant to the clients involved.
In order for the client to be engaged their needs to be information that they see as beneficial or
interesting to them. The informational meetings I had also worked best when the clients could be
involved and included in discussions. Activities like the soda/candy consumed compared to the
vegetables/fruit were meaningful engaging experiences for the clients. The clients were asked to
write how many of each soda/candy and vegetables/fruit they consumed on that given day. The
numbers were added up and a ratio was determined. I think this was a good way to keep the
clients involved and inform them at the same time. There was also a better respect for myself
after I demonstrated proper knowledge to the clients over the semester. The clients were very
questioning of my beliefs and information presented at first. Once there was more respect
between myself and the clients the information presented was applied well and a better
understanding from the clients occurred.
What I learned about myself as a prospective health promotion specialist as a result of this
experience/work sample:
I learned through this experience as a health promotion specialist that assessment of the clients is
necessary in many regards. The survey conducted during the second week of meetings was a
great way for myself to plan out the future for information presented. With the information I
could get a better understanding of the clients and find out what interests them along with their
needs. Developing plans around the clients needs gained more respect from the clients. I also
learned that advocating for a cause I believe in can be a great rewarding experience. I was
allowed to help the community and be a positive role model for many young athletes. With the
experience I was given the opportunity to grow professionally and really demonstrate my
knowledge gained at UW-Platteville. I found the experience to be very rewarding and truly
believe I made a positive difference in the clients lives.
