Instructional Objective

After watching a short video about the moon and having a small discussion on
what the students watched, students will be able to identify and describe the phases
of the moon and also how long it takes to orbit the earth
Standards and Indicators
Science Standards (NYS)
o Students will identify and describe the phases of the moon
o Students will state how long it thats the moon to orbit the earth
Indicator: This will be evident after student watch a short video on the moon and
given a handout with a fun activity correlating with the moon
Motivation
Students will watch a short video about the moon

Adaptations

Students with a visual learning style will experiment with different font sizes and
styles to enhance readability (on computer).
Students with an auditory learning will read material aloud to them and engage in
conversation about the subject matter.
Students with a kinesthetic learning style will use role play or dramatize concepts.
Students can move objects around to dramatize a concept or act out the concept
themselves.
Differentiation of Instruction
o Tier 1: students will work independently at own pace and will identify and
describe the phases of the moon
o Tier 2: students will work with some assistance and will be able to identify
and describe the phases of the moon
o Tier 3: students will work more assistance and will be able to identify and
describe the phases of the moon
Developmental Procedures
-Students will watch a short video on the phases of the moon
-As a class, we will discuss what we learned, answer any questions
-Students will go to centers and will be given a handout on the phases of the moon
-Teacher will demonstrate activity. Activity will be to write about the moon phases
using Oreo cookies
Assessment

Students will successfully name and describe the phases of the moon
Student will successfully state how long the moon revolves around the earth
Independent Practice
Students will be given a take home worksheet moon journal. Every night the
student keeps a moon journal, they will write what they see the moon looks like at
that night and they will log in the journal for one month.
Follow-up: Direct teacher intervention and Academic enrichment
Direct teacher intervention: The teacher will work independently with the
students who needs any help and provide additional reading materials and offer
tutoring for extra support
Academic enrichment: Students may use iPad or computer to continue research
and exploration on solar system and phases of the moon
