Class Observation Form

5
Faculty Member Observed: Ms. Lorna Lue Observer: Basma Abdulla
Class Observed: Level 2
Date and Time of Class: 28th September, 2014; 12:30 1:30
1) The goal or outcome for this class session is:
a. Listening and Speaking: Making an Introduction. Part 1: Preparing for introducing a
classmate.
2) Describe what happened in this class session.
a. This was the second lesson of this unit, where students had to make another draft of their
writing, and correct their mistakes. The teacher had marked their writing and sent it back
for them to correct. She was a very active teacher, students were kept on their toes, and
everything was timed. I feel like her methods were very effective because they kept the
whole class on track. She managed to achieve the goal of having students work on their
2nd drafts and re-submit their work to her.
3) What worked particularly well during this class session?
a. I feel like the classroom atmosphere was tense and alert and surprisingly it made the
students produce higher quality work. They were all really trying their best. What worked
particulary well was that the students had grown accustomed to the classroom routines
they were trained so she didnt have to re-state any directions more than once. Students
worked together in groups to help correct each others work, and that added to the
atmosphere of trying to produce high-quality work.
4) Was there a point during this class session when the faculty member lost student
attention?
a. One student had missed the previous lesson, and so did not have a first draft. She was
also sick and could not really work on it. The teacher gave her the resources to start on
the first draft but it seemed like the girl opted to not work on it. The teacher seemed to
allow that girl to rest for this class, provided the work was submitted by the end of the
day. I think her reaction was good, since the girl was too sick to work but could at least
benefit from the suggestions and discussions around her.
5) How did the physical surroundings or environment of the class session affect the learning
experience, if at all?
a. My favorite part about the physical surroundings was a little box the teacher kept at the
front of the classroom for students to put their phones on so that they wouldnt get
distracted during the lesson. The learning experience as a whole was a serious one and
the teacher seemed to have full control of the classroom.
6) What suggestions do you have for the faculty member you observed in terms of expansion
of particularly effective teaching strategies, improvement of teaching strategies that didnt
work well, solving problems you observed, etc.?
a. I would have suggested modeling how to correct a first draft but she had done that
already in the previous class. One thing I noticed was that students opted to present about
names like twitter I think I would have taken more control and asked students to use
real life names so that they could practice introducing friends. I think maybe reexplaining what the objectives of the lesson were (to make an introduction) so that
students made smarter choices about the names they chose to write about.
