Students face dangers of driving

daughters. The man who struck

both officers was taken into custody and charged of First Degree
Manslaughter on February 6,

Students believe that educating students on the dangers of
distractive driving will help people take the new law more seriously.
It think the passing of the
new law against texting and driving is a great thing, but I dont
think that people, especially
teenagers, will stop texting and
driving just because the law says
to said Tram To, senior.
However, I do believe that
teaching the dangers and consequences it brings with it can
make a huge impact on how
someone thinks of the action.
We all know texting and driving
isnt a smart thing to do, but until
we hear stories about lives being
taken because of it, do we really
put into perspective what could
happen to us said To
A recent nationwide survey
showed that 58% of high school
seniors and 43% of high school
juniors said theyve emailed or
texted while driving. A survey
was done at Clinton High School,
and out of 100 student drivers, 39
of them admitted that they text
and drive.
The national survey also said
that 21.3% of drivers said they
have never eaten food while
driving, and the school survey
showed that 28% of students
who drive do not eat food or
drink while they are driving.
Research has shown that people who eat have 44% slower reaction times and those who drink
non-alcoholic beverages have
22% slower reaction times.
Also, the national survey
showed that 47% of women and
71% of men said they had been
distracted by passengers in their
vehicle, which had caused them
to be involved in an accident.
In the schools survey, 54%
of the student drivers said that
they usually have one to two passengers with them and 34% said
they typically have two to three
passengers with them.

After the assembly at the middle school, Cameron Gladd, 2008 said that they have been in an
graduate, helps Nicks Promise and gives DJ Hernandez, sr., accident or near-accident due to
a no distractive driving bracelet. The bracelets were given to distractive driving.

A new law came in to action

on November 1, restricting the
use of cell phones while driving,
like texting. Oklahoma was the
46th state to pass this law and
will fine drivers who break this
law a minimum of $100.
Before this law was passed,
however; there was a law dealing
with distractive driving. It states,
A vehicle shall not be moved
from the lane until the driver has
first ascertained the that movement can be made with safety
and then give a signal, not less
than the last 100 feet traveled by
the vehicle, of his intention to
change lanes.
Recently, Nicks Promise
Foundation came and visited
with students and spread their
mission on the Move Over and

Slow Down laws as well as the

dangers of distractive driving.
They travel and educate teenagers on these things in memory of
one of their fallen trooper, Nicholas Dees.
Trooper Dees and Trooper
Keith Burch were out of their
patrol vehicles investigating a
traffic accident where a tractortrailer rig had rolled over on
I-40. While they were investigating, a vehicle going westbound
went around their patrol cars
and struck both officers leaving
Trooper Dees dead at the scene
and Trooper Burch in critical
condition.
On January 31, 2005, Trooper
Dees died at the age of 30 because a man was updating his
social media on his cell phone.
The trooper had a wife and two
