Describe the characters response to a difficult challenge or major event occurring in the story.

LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
Students will describe ways to solve a problem or overcome a challenge by describing the characters
experience.

CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
In the previous lesson, students described the difficult situation that the three little pigs had to
experienced from the big bad wolf using details. In the next lesson, students will identify words and
phrases in the story that suggest feelings.

C. Step #1 Name the important characters
a. In pairs, identify the important characters of the story and tell one important thing that they
did in the story.
b. Students share their responses with their partners and a few students will share with the
class.

Step #2 Discuss what is a challenge


a. Teacher will ask students for possible definitions of what a challenge is. Define the word
challenge using a chart. Who encounters a challenge in the story?
b. Teacher listens to students responses.
Step #3 Charting Responses
a. With a partner, discuss what Grandma Beetle gets saved from, how she overcomes a
challenge. How does Mr. Calavera respond? Did grandma beetle do this on purpose or not?
b. Teacher will write down students responses on a chart
Step #4 Application Task/Formative Assessment
a. students will complete a worksheet based on the things that grandma beetle does to
overcome her challenge.
b. teacher reviews the worksheets and some students may share their answers.
Step #5 Summative assessment
a. Students will write journal entries of a time when they overcame a challenge
b. Teacher will ask students to share their journal entries with a partner.
B. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection):
The worksheet will have a picture of grandma beetle and the paper will have 10 boxes. In each box, the
students have to number each box from 1 to 10 and draw objects pertaining to that certain number. The
objects drawn have to be of other possible things that grandma Beetle can do to entertain Sr. Calavera so
that he can go away and not come back for her. Students draw the pictures and label what the objects are.
