01

Introduction
Design decisions have significant impact on costs associated with

the manufacture of the product.

Piece part cost
Cost of quality
Set up costs
Labor content
Flexibility

02

Design for Manufacture

Broad term applied to a variety of tools, guidelines and

methods to ensure,

Low cost parts

Piece parts are built using the lowest cost process
possible
Design dimensions/tolerances are specified with
thought

Low cost assembly

Low cost processes
Processes are designed to target the critical to function
characteristics

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Guidelines

1. Design for a minimum number of parts.
2. Develop a modular design.
3. Minimize part variations.
4. Design parts to be multifunctional
5. Design parts for multiuse.
6. Design parts for ease of fabrication.
7. Design for top-down assembly.
8. Maximize compliance; design for ease of assembly.
9. Minimize handling; design for handling presentation.
10. Evaluate assembly methods.
11. Eliminate adjustments.
05

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Guidelines

12. Avoid flexible components; they are difficult to handle.
13. Allow for maximum intolerance of parts.
14. Use known and proven vendors and suppliers.
15. Minimize subassemblies.
16. Use new technology only when necessary.
17. Emphasize standardization.
18. Use the simplest possible operations.
19. Use operations of known capability.
20. Minimize setups and interventions.
