Title: Three color sentence

Artist: Joseph Kosuth
Date created: 1965
Dimension: 48 1/2 inches (123.19 cm) length
Medium: Red, blue, and green neon tubing
General Reaction:
My first response to this work: I cant wait to see this in person with my own
eyes.
How it makes me feel: Calm, happy, relaxed
What it makes me think: What made him want to use neon tubing? Why did he
choose it to say three color sentence? What were his struggles in making this art piece?
How long did it take him to do it? Does he like it?
What is reminds me of: This reminds me of chinatown at night, there's a lot of
signs with bright neon tubing

Description:
Images i see: I just see exactly what's in my face, a neon tubing sign that says
three color sentence.
Colors, Forms, Textures: Red, blue, and green. Free form. Texture would be
almost like a smooth glass.
Outstanding feature: Color choice
The artist uses the lights to show where the light and dark areas are. The
areas closest to the light are lighter and the further you get from that area the
darker it gets.
How i think the artwork was made: I honestly had no idea how the artist made
the piece but after i found out what he used i kind of had an idea, He used tubing so
maybe it was bendable leading him to create these letters out of the tubing.
Formal relationship of Shapes and Images:
Elements of art that dominate the work: Shape(very unique), and line(had
many different types of lines incorporated in the art piece).
Significant negative area/space in the work: The background, everything else is
so bright and colorful while the background just has negative space. The background
though does not take away or distract from the actual art piece. It it were to be a colorful

background there would be too much going on and it would be hard to concentrate on the
main focus on the piece.
Sense of movement: There are some straight lines and also lines that curve so yes
there is sense of movement going on in this piece.
Contrast: The neon lights and the background are completely different
Focus: The focus in this piece is the sentence, What causes me to look at is the
great colorful neon lights. The colors just go so well together so its kind of hard to not
look at it, it really stands out.
Mood: Calming, worry free.
Con textual examination:
I could not find any information for where and when the art work was made
I could also not find any information on what the artist said about his own
work
There was nothing happening is the artists world or in Society that may have
influenced his artwork.
The artist has many similar works. He actually use a lot of neon tubing lights.
Interpretation: I have no idea as to what this piece means. I do think it's a very unique
and get the viewer to think a lot. It made me wonder what his purpose was in writing
the sentence that he wrote. I think of many questions when I look at the pea I think
of many questions when I look at the piece because it's not an ordinary type of
painting or drawing so it makes you wonder. I do wish that I could meet the artist in
person so that I can ask him all of the questions that I have for him. I actually would
probably name The piece wonder. I would name it this because a lot of people would
have a lot of questions and just wonder what the purpose of it is and what the artist
is trying to convey.
Evaluation: my feelings and perceptions on this artwork have actually changed since the
first critiquing I did on the artwork. Now that I look at it for a second time and have
to do this essay I am thinking about it more in depth. After when I saw this piece I
was just like whatever and didn't really think deeply about it. Now I am taking the
time to evaluate every little piece which I probably should be doing in the first place.

Title: Head red and yellow

Artist: Roy Lichtenstein
Date created: 1962
Dimension: 121.9 x 121.9 cm
Medium: Oil paint
General reaction:
My first response was that I could not believe that I was seeing one of Roy's pieces in person.
This made me feel very happy and thankful. Happy because I got to see The real deal in person
with my own eyes. Thankful because I know that if it weren't for my art teacher I wouldn't
have been able to see it.
This piece reminds me of comic books.
Description: I just see a very happy lady.
There are only two colors present in this piece which are red and yellow. There is a lot of texture
shown in the woman's face.
The artist does show values from light to dark in this piece.
You can tell in the face because it's much later read than in the hair.
I think that this artwork was made by drawing it and then just painting it over with oil paint or
maybe he could've just started with the oil paint and not have sketched it out first.

I can see different techniques used in the texture and lines.

Formal Relationship of Shapes and Images:
Colors: Red and yellow
Textures: Smooth and woven
No significant negative area/space in the work
No sense of movement that i see or notice
There is contrast, the two colors are both very different from each other.
The lady is looking to the left and is smiling.
The focus lies on the lady. What causes me to look at her is all the red.
The mood that is presented is happiness. We are meant to feel happy and possibly even want to
smile back to the lady in the painting.
Interpretation:
I think this work means to always be happy. The art piece conveys a happy vibe, and honestly
when i saw this i was so excited to see it and even smiled. I was really amazed when i saw
it and i think that Roy was aiming to just make something that would make others stare in
awe.
If i were to give this piece a title i would call it Just smile.
Evaluation:
My feelings towards this art piece remained the same. When i first saw it i was alone and to be
honest i'm glad i was because if i were to be with someone else i probably wouldn't have
been as amazed. I think it's better to experience looking at art work alone because you can
take all the time you want to just stare at the piece.

Modern Rebels Exhibition

I went to an exhibit called Modern Rebels with my teachers and classmates. The exhibit
was based on artists that were considered rebels. Artists such as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol,
Vincent van Gogh and much more were considered rebels because they invented new kinds of
art. I got to see many different types of art and also got to see some artists work that i never even
heard of before. I was really excited to go to the exhibit because i had never gone to an art
exhibit before. So i didnt know what to expect, all i knew was that i was going to see a lot of
amazing artwork. There were many pieces that I liked, didn't like and also there were some that I
didn't really care about. I really got connected with two pieces. Out of all the artwork I saw there
were two that struck me the most.
The first piece that I really connected with was Head red and yellow by Roy
Lichtenstein. When I first saw this piece I was really amazed. I could not believe that I was for
the first time seeing an art piece that this artist held with his own hands. That fact that I got to see
it in person with my own eyes was just unbelievable. I was really happy and just feel really
thankful for being able to go to the exhibit. It was a really great experience, and i can't wait to go
again. This piece reminds me of old comic books which is pretty cool to me. In the piece you just
see a very happy lady. There are only two colors that are present in the piece, red and yellow.
Theres lots of texture shown in the womans face. The artist doesnt show much value in the
piece, theres only about three. White being the lightest, the red in the face being the second
lightest and the red and yellow being the darkest. Altogether i think Roy picked great colors, they
all flow well together.

The second piece that i really connected with was Three color sentence by Joseph
Kosuth. This piece to me stood out more than Head red and yellow. What made this piece
unique was the medium used. None of the other artists in the exhibit used tubing for an art piece.

The most outstanding feature was the color choice. I like how it wasn't all just one simple color,
it was three very bright colors that make the piece stand out and really catch your attention. I
remember coming back just to see this piece, i would sit on a bench and just stare at the piece. I
like vibe i got from the art piece. I felt worry free, in fact i wasn't even thinking anything at all
for a majority of the time when i was staring at the piece. It wasn't until the very end that i started
to get all these questions in my head about the piece. I wondered what went through Joseph's
head, what made him choose this sentence and colors. Most of all i wanted to know why he
picked tubing, why did he want to use lights. I also thought of how he made it, i really had no
idea and tried to think of how he couldve done it. But i didn't let my thoughts distract me, i
enjoyed every second i spent looking at the piece.
When i got home i wanted to look at the rest of Josephs artwork. When i saw that he
made a lot of neon tubing pieces i was just amazed. I thought to myself how much time did he
even spend making these light signs? Why did he choose his pieces to say the things they do? I
find it so weird and cool because most of his signs just make you wonder. Like why would he
make a sign say Red or Four colors four words . I think that's what Josephs goal was to
do. I feel like he wanted to leave his viewers to just wonder and stare and take in the art. If i had
the chance to i would love to make neon tubing signs, maybe ill try it someday. Theses artists
inspire me to keep creating art and they also taught me that it's okay to be different. Im glad i
had the opportunity to go to an exhibit for the first time, i truly had a good experience.
