Message From Presidente Dayton

Becoming Perfect vs. The Syndrome of Perfectionism

From time to time in the mission I speak with missionaries who are frustrated because
they make mistakes while trying to be perfect. The purpose of mans mortal existence is to grow and
become like God. Life is a process designed to be filled with opposition, choices, mistakes, and
repentance. Elder Bruce R. McConkie has stated that,
You dont need to get a complex that you have to be perfect to be saved. You dont.
Theres only been one perfect person, and thats the Lord Jesus Christ, but in order to be saved in the
Kingdom of God and to pass the test of mortality you have to get on the straight and narrow path
thus charting a course leading to eternal lifeand then, being on that path, pass out of this life in full
fellowship. Although you havent fully overcome the world and you havent done all you hoped you
might doyoure still going to be savedYou dont have to live a life thats truer than true. You dont
have to have an excessive zeal that becomes fanatical and unbalanced. What you have to do is stay
in the mainstream of the Church and live as upright and decent people live.
Elder Marvin J. Ashton has commented that, We need to come to terms with our desire
to reach perfection and our frustration when our accomplishments or our behaviors are less than
perfect. I feel that one of the great myths we would do well to dispel is that weve come to earth to
perfect ourselves, and nothing short of that will do. We will not become perfect in this life, though we
can make significant strides toward that goal.
Finally, Elder Cecil O Samuelson gave a wonderful presentation in which he declared,
One area of confusion not rare among us is the notion that worthiness is synonymous with perfection.
It is not! One can be fully worthy in a gospel sense and yet still be growing while dealing with personal
imperfections. Perfectionism is not laudable. It is corrosive and destructive and is the antithesis of the
healthy quest for eventual perfection that the Savior prescribes Much of what the Lord requires us to
do is focused on our interactions with others. It is extremely important to understand clearly which
options and events are under our control and which are not The Greek translation for perfection
should be understood as complete, finished, fully developed. We do not and cannot become perfect
in everything by ourselves Most people suffering from the syndrome of perfectionism do not have
nearly as much trouble loving God and others as they do themselves. We must love our neighbor, but,
just as certainly, we need to learn to love ourselves. Loving ourselves includes not being unreasonable
or too hard on ourselves when we make mistakes or act imperfectly.
Individuals with the syndrome of perfectionism are extremely hard on themselves, set
unrealistically high goals, and find no lasting pleasure in achievement because they are never fully
satisfied. They are forever seeing the glass half-empty instead of half-full. Other manifestations of
perfectionism include excessive preoccupation with details, excessive devotion to work to the exclusion
of interpersonal relationships, indecisiveness which leads to avoiding decision making, a personality
style which is formal and lacking warmth, fear of making errors, a need to be above criticism in all
things and cautiousness and chronic inner pressure.

Message From Hermana Dayton

Developing a Christlike Character

President David O McKay once said, "Man's chief concern in life should not be the acquiring of gold
or of fame or of material possessions. It should not be the development of physical prowess, nor of
intellectual strength, but his aim, the highest in life, should be the development of a Christ-like
character. Character grows from within and is built by adherence to principles. Character is
developed through obedience to laws of life as revealed through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Character is the inward motivation to do what is right according to the highest standards of behavior
in every situation and no matter the cost.
There has only been one perfect man in the history of the world-- the exemplary personality of Jesus
of Nazareth, the Son of God, and the Redeemer of the world. No man can do better than to accept
Christ as our greatest model and the safest guide. We can always look to Christ and find perfection.
His character exemplified truth, justice, wisdom, compassion and self control. His every thought, His
every word, His every deed was in harmony with divine law.
Intellect, feeling, habit, and character all become what they are through the influence of little things.
Life is made up of little Christ-like acts performed this hour, this minute, at "all times, in all things, and in
all places." What a man is today will largely determine what he will be tomorrow. What he has been
during the past year to a great extent marks his course for the year ahead.
As President Dayton and I set goals for the upcoming year we plan to include character goals with
the hope that we will become more like the Savior. I sincerely hope that as we continue to focus on
character this year we will make progress in becoming better and happier as we follow the Savior.
We love you and pray for you daily. We feel so grateful for the wonderful examples you are and the
strength of character you possess.
Best sincere wishes for a very Happy New Year.
Herman Dayton

The Miracle of Baptism

Our miracle this week was

the baptism of Wendy. I
honestly wasn't here for much
of her teaching, but I had the
privilege to watch her get
baptized by her husband,
Samuel. They both seemed to
emanate light afterwards, and
the spirit hit like a huge tidal
wave! It was a great moment
to see.

So, (drum roll please....) WE

HAD A WHITE CHRISTMAS! Rody
was baptized last Saturday
morning and it was so
beautiful. What an amazing
experience to see him change
his life from the moment we
knocked on his door to the
moment he came out of the
water, clean and
ready to start this new chapter
in his life. After he was baptized
we asked him to bear his
testimony, and it was so simple
yet so powerful. He talked
about how he knows the Book
of Mormon is true and that this
is the only true church on the
earth today. I have never had
anyone thank me as much as
Rody did. I am the one who
should be grateful to Heavenly
Father for giving me the
opportunity to teach Rody the
gospel.
Hi president this week was
good. This last Saturday was
the baptism of Nely. It was a
very special experience that I
had to be part of the baptism.
She has had things and
problems and always said that
it was impossible to correct but
she was able to overcome all
of them so that she could be
baptized.

This week was incredible

there were so many miracles!
First we had the baptism of
Carlos! It was very good! It was
my first time in the water, and
that was a great experience!
The spirit was strong as always,
and after the ordinance Carlos
felt released and happy! And
in his words todo esta
perfecto! I felt lucky and
honored to be part of his
conversion! I'm glad I could
help bring another soul unto
Christ!

This week we were so blessed

by the baptism of Grecia, the 9
year old daughter of our
investigator (who is dating a
member). She is so sweet and
innocent and yet has such a
deep knowledge and intuition.
A few days before her baptism
Susan, a member and family
friend, had shown her her
baptism photos and Grecia
had asked her why she was
crying. :) Before the baptism
she was really nervous but
excited and afterwards during
the rest of the program she
began to cry. She said she
didn't understand why she was
crying. It was a very impactful
moment for both her and her
mother. She will never forget
that day of the way she felt.
She is such a angel and we are
so grateful for the ward
support she has received.

President this week has

been filled with miracles and
so many amazing things are
happening here in _______
and Im so excited to
continue to serve here for
longer! This week Elder
___and I were able to
baptize Isabel she is 9 and
her family are all menos
activos and we did not know
about her for a while then a
member told us that she
wanted to be baptized so
then we started working with
her and she was baptized
yesterday! Unfortunately her
mom was sick Sunday so she
was not be confirmed on
Sunday but next week she
will for sure be confirmed. Ill
carry her to church if I have
to.

The Miracle of Baptism

This week the baptism of Jose
was incredible. It was hands
down, the best baptism
service I have ever attended.
The spirit was undeniable.
Everyone in the room was
crying. The ordinance itself
was beautifully performed by
one of our members here
who has become a great
friend to Jose. Jose also
preceded to give his
testimony afterwards and
testified with clarity and
power about the truthfulness
of the church. He concluded
his testimony by sharing his
desire to see his wife enter
into the covenant of baptism
so that they one day will be
able to "seal their love" in the
Temple of the Lord. The
baptism of Jose was an
experience I will never forget
and something that has
strengthened my testimony.
