Sibiu- beautiful Sibiu

Sibiu was the capital of Romania in Medieval times. It had a large community of
Germans. Since the downfall of the Communism times, many Germans have
migrated to Germany, but even so, there is a strong Germanic influence in the city.
The city centre has a number of Gothic buildings which makes it one of the most
beautiful in Romania. Of particular interest is the Cathedral and The Town Hall
Tower.
In the summer, Sibiu is unique in Romania for not only does it have Romanian
traditional festivals, but as you might expect, it has Germanic festivals such as The
German Festival of Songs and Dances.
In World War II, the city and Romania gave support to Hitler. As a result, many
important works of art and antiques were taken to Germany. Sibiu was also home to
the German army and had a strong German arsenal in the city.
In 2007, such was Sibius cultural and economic progress that Sibiu was declared
the European Capital of Culture attracting tourists from all over Europe.
Today, Sibiu is famous for its history, architecture and traditions and continues to be
one of Romanias most fascinating cities.
