The Structure and The Functions
of Plant Tissues

The structures of a root,

stem, leaf, flower, fruit,
and a seed are basically
the same, that is, they
have the main tissue
system consisting of the
epidermis, cortex, and
vascular tissues.

The Structure and The Functions
of Plant Tissues
• EPIDERMIS is the outer part of the plant organ. Its function is to
protect the inner part of the plant. Root hair, stomata, and glands can
be found in this tissue.

• CORTEX is a filler of space between the epidermis and the vascular

tissues.
Parenchyma cells have a thin wall. Inside the parenchyma cells you
can find plastids such as chloroplast and starch.
Collenchyma and Schlerenchyma. Both of these tissues have a
thick wall. The schlerenchyma has a wall usually strengthened by
lignin. The collenchyma has a function of supporting the young plant,
while the schlerenchyma has a function of supporting the old plant.

• The vascular tissue fills the inside part of the plant organ. In the inner
part of the vascular tissue, you can still find the parenchyma called
pith. You can find two tissues in the vascular tissue named the
xylem and phloem.
