peoplehaveoftenwonderedwhatledhertobetheastonishingauthorsheis.Afteradramatic
divorceofherparentsshecouldhardlyremember,Isabelmovedwithhermother,Francisca,to
theirgrandparents.Isabelwasthreebythenandtheonethingshecouldrememberclearlywas
hergrandmothersbeliefinfortunesandastrology.Forthenext13years,Isabelwouldroam
freelyinthemagicalhousereadingwhatevershepleased.Duringthistime,Allendeattendeda
privateschoolandgraduatedat16.At19,shemarriedMiguelFrias,anobleengineer.She
beganworkingatthe
UnitedNationsFoodandAgriculturalOrganizationinSantiago,Chile,in
thelate1960s.Soonafter,hersparkofwritingtookaflameandshestartedbeingajournalist.
